just had the vet out to my horse as he is having a major reaction to some kind of flying beastie. Ive been left with 2 boxes of piriton and vet said 30tabs twice a day for 5 days, then 20 for 5 days, then 10.

Vet has now gone and im thinking, does he really mean 60 tabs per day. I'l phone and check but I dont want them to think im completely stupid:o Has anyone else been told to give this much?

Obviously I don't know what your vet said but yes quite possible!! My horse was given tablets a few years back for a pollen allergy. Between the two boxes of different tablets I was given he was on about 50 a day reducing slowly over a couple of days.

Yes that sounds the right amount!.

My pony had to have oodles of them, but like you, I was able to reduce them after a few days.

I remember using a pessel and mortor to grind them down to mix in with her feed!

That sounds like the dose I had to give my mare, she had nasty lumps everywhere above the knee. She couldn't have steriods because of the laminitis risk. They were sugar pills,so the greedy girl ate them fine.

how many can the average human have per day/hour? then multiply that up by 8-10 and you've got horse weight so horse number of tabs. sounds right to me :)

Haha that explains why the 8 tablets I gave to my boy had zilch effect. Dose for a human is 1 tablet 3 times a day so I multiflied it up to 8 tablets but obviously he needed more!

I found that he ate them really well whole with a handful of alfa A and nuts and I didn't need to crumble them up.

My 20kg dog is on 1 or 2 tabs three times a day for allergic skin disease. I've had a section A on 20 tabs twice a day then reducing in a similar fashion to you after a severe reaction when the idiot had a good roll and a long snooze in nettles.

Antihistamines are not very effective in horses. Also Ucerax tends to be more effective than Piriton or Clarityn. And yes, dose rate sounds about right. ;)
