Hi have been trawling the net for information on horse allergies, and notice that a lot of people mention giving piriton for head shaking and sweet itch etc. Would this be the ordinary Piriton from the chemists or is there an equine one?

I spoke to a vet about this a few years ago when one of the horses on the yard was stung by a wasp.

His view was that you would need buckets of antihistamines to make any difference and he wasnt one for prescribing or recomending them for horses. I assume because they also might make them dozy.

Personally I would be wary of giving them.

My horse has atarax anti-histamines for his allergy - prescribed by the vet. If his rash is full blown, we are told to give 10 tablets 3 times a day. I reduce as the rash goes down. He is a 450kg 15.3HH TB. They worked for him - no side effects.

I have used Piriton (human form, got it from the chemist, but on the vet's advice) in the short term for a sweetitch case. She had 35 tablets a day, split into 3 doses. She was a bit dopey when she was on them but they did alleviate her symptoms, however I wouldn't advise using them for any longer than a few days as they do make them drowsy.

I tried giving a pony piroton for sweetitch - the vet said it had to be the piriton, not the one a day piritonease (the ingredient is different). I gave him 5 in the morning, child rode him in the afternoon and he went absolutly mental - racing around and around bucking and charging. I didn't give him any more and he didn't behave like that again!

My mare had a bad reaction to vaccine so was prescribed Piriton as they didnt want to give her a steroid jab due to other problems. I can't remember how many she had (maybe 10 in a feed?) for a few days. I could check. L

I asked my vet about it too as my horse was suffering from terrible sweet itch and he was very very distressed... vet said he'd need about 30 tablets a day and that it wasn't neccessarily going to work. In the end i tried homeopathic drops and followed a good routine with them and he's barely shown any symptoms this year.

Good luck

PS you can bulk buy piriton- around 500 tablets for £18 or something like that. saw the link here somewhere- can dig it out if i can find it
