my advised to give my horse piriton to help with his sweetitch, she said 10 tablets per day but its trial and error re the dose. I started yesterday and when I brought him in he was rubbing and scratching something awful. he wears a SI hoody when out btw. how long did the piriton take to work? and do i need to up the dose?

Don't ask online for drug doses. You need to ask your vet. Also, anti histamines are not very effective in horses - and piriton is not the most effective of the anti-histamines for horses either. I would not expect a result in 24hrs anyway.

I've been trying piriton for my horse but it hasn't had much effect. I've read around a bit more and it seems the cetirizine may be more effective but I've not tried it yet. My vet said I could experiment with different anti-histamines though and see if any work better. Here is an interesting website. http://www.equinevetcentre.co.uk/Cetirizine-200--400mg-Sachets.html
I assume you'd need to get these on prescription though. I read anywhere between 0.2 - 0.4 mg/kg can be effective but obviously the article only says works in 30-40% of cases. Also it doesn't mention sweet itch so I don't know if this would be different. I'm sure you will check with your vet first anyway.

Thanks for the replies. It is my vet who told me to give my horse piriton, 10 a day. should have put that in the first post, sorry.
they are still itchy but less frantic today and calmer in themselves so maybe its beginning to work?

I sometimes give my TB Piriton when her eyes swell in summer. They make a very slight difference after a couple of days. I also give her 10 per day. I think horses will react differently to different drugs, just as people do. I have hayfever and take Cetirizine which works a bit, but Loratadine doesn't work one bit! It's definitely worth a try. There is an online pharmacy where you can still get Piriton in bulk of 500 tablets for about £11 without a prescription.

Hi again, bought the piriton fron hyperdrug, like holly hocks advises. a few days in now with the treatment. horse less irritable and highly strung generally now, just like what he's like in the winter. I guess he was overall uncomfortable despite having the SI rug. very pleased.
hope this helps someone with a grumpy/jumpy/nippy horse.

Thanks for the link. i need to buy them in tubs of 500. i find my vet is the cheapest, or Hyperdrug but you havre to watch the postage costs.
