You would need to feed human antihistamines by the bucketload to have any effect on a horse. Dont waste your money, buy a decent sweetitch rug and some benzyl benzoate.

Agree totally with spaniel, when my shetland, who has terrible sweetitch, had a very nasty reaction to what we think may have been a sting we gave him antihistamines(sp) when i told the vet she said it was a very nice thought but even a little pony his size would need a considerable amount of tablets!
Benzyl benzoate and boetts do nothing at all for my horse, who has all the sweetitch symptoms, but we now reckon is allergic to something other than midge bites.
All affected horses seem to react differently, as in the response to the vaccine trial - some total cures, some no effect, and some in between.
My vet said the other day they were developing an antihistamine for horses, but it does have the drowsiness side effect - it really is time a lot more research was done in this area.
