its a dangerous dog amnesty as in the four breeds that are banned under the dangerous dogs act. owners will not be prosecuted but all the dogs will be put to sleep

its so un clear regarding cross breeds. i believe they went on it bull type qualities for the dog that mauled the child to death. its a shame that innocent animals, most which are born well and of sound mind ot be PTS because of their owners illegal activities as in breeding or buying them

its right, most owners keeps soft to them if they bit and they allow them to learn from owners which they need to be firm but that is kind of sad.

Didn't mean you were lying by far fetched, just that it is utterly ridiculous to put all pit bull terriers down. It is right for dogs to take the flack for people's stupidity.

And how many of the people who own and bred them against the law will "see the light" and turn theor dogs in?
I cant see it being anything other then responsable owners worried abot possable prosicution, so the dogs we need to do something about will still be out there.

As sad as it is - the police have no option. Bit Bulls are a breed outlawed in this country. They won't therefore be able to re-home them.

If the stupid buggers that have them hadn't purchased them in the first place, it wouldn't be an issue.

What about those crossed with Pit Bull?

[/ QUOTE ]

Good question...how many soft as butter lurchers would fit that category? Do they need to be PTS too because of several irresponsible familes?

It horrifies me just how many dogs do fit into that category. And I thought the dog that killed that poor wee girl actually had to be DNA checked to find if it did have pit bull in it. Is that what they're intending to do?

I admit I done a test on the net and out of like 20 dogs you have to chose the pit bull terrier, most of them were obviously the likes of rotties, dobes etc and it took me 6 goes to find the pit bull!

My friend has a staffordshire bull terrier and i would go out and but one tomorrow if i wasnt in full time work (not fair on the dog). My friends dog couldnt fight his way out of a wet paper bag and as for kids he thinks they are great because they roll around on the floor with him and generally tire him out we have no worries about leaving him in a room on his own with kids at anytime. But there is so much a dog can tolerate regardless of breed. poor animals too loyal for their own good.

Oh dear ;_;

There's a guy in my class who was given a pit bull pup by his uncle a year or so ago. He LOVES that dog. Like, seriously.

Although 'its' in them I truly believe its the way they are brought up aswell.

In places like Australia and NZ, pit bull terriers are commonly kept as family pets and there are no restrictions on breeding/ownig/selling them.

Which goes to show that it is the nasty, drug-dealing, violent scum in this country who buy them to make them look hard/cool/tough have no idea how to control them (or purposely encourage them to be aggressive) and it ends up with the animals being PTS.

I don't particularly like the breed myself but it is so wrong that these dogs are being culled because of the humans that keep them. It will just make the dog more of a status symbol than before anyway so the prblem will continue.

I'm one of those stupid buggers that bought a Xbreed, he was sold as a younger staffy pup. He looked just like one until he matured.
My boy was the most wonderful, non-aggressive dog you'd ever meet. He was an obedience star and loved by anyone he met. He was attacked by countless dogs throughout his life (due to his overly friendly nature) and never retaliated. However, his brother who lives up the road is a menace (so obviously this didn't come form the breeding).
I am quite sure that if he was still around today he'd be called in (Tragically, he was PTS at 6 years as he developed bone cancer). I would never have intentionally bought a PB x but would have fought to the end to prove his reliabilty, he was a dog in a million.
I believe the law needs to be harder on owners of aggressive and anti-social dogs, whatever breed (including little terriers, etc). Yes a large dog can do more damage but that doesn't really send out the right message in my opinion.

I agree Jo, its the owners who are to blame, they're usually the ones with kids that get ASBO's too. Its the way you bring them up I'm sure.

They work out whether a pit-bull is a pit-bull by measuring the bone structure of their heads etc. So if a pit-bull was crossed with something else, it's unlikely that it would fall under the 'illegal breed' unless mixed with a Staffy that is so similar.

Apparently a Pit-Bull is more of a type rather than a breed. i.e bred through several crosses with other breeds to form their thick skulls, chunky shoulder etc, perfect for strength and stamina when fighting...poor things

Cant agree more with that.
OH has a friend that thinks you need to beat a dog to show it who is boss(yep, one of those) and he wants a mastiff("cause they are well 'ard"

).I really can't see any dog he gets NOT turning on him within a year-and I wouldnt blame the dog one bit.
A dog will respond to the enviroment it's in, beat it and expect it to snap at some point, show it love and you have a loyal friend it's whole life.
I DO NOT belive any type or breed is nasty, bad breeders and bad owners make them that way.
