Pitbulls?

No I don't think they are.

I can't remember what breed, but I know that for some breeds the dog has to be muzzled when in public, you have to have an ownership license and you can't breed them.

so a pitbull puppy I just met outside asda (very friendly and cute..) was probably not legally allowed out without muzzle. Attached to a teeenage girl..

Sure it wasn't a staffie/english bull terrier? I understand there's a big crackdown on illegal pitbulls at the moment, to try and combat the dogfighting rings, although doubtless there are still some being imported. Unlikely to be attached to a teenager though and in such a public place!

Well if it was in fact a Pitbull and not some other breed, then it was not only not legally allowed out without a muzzle, but it was also illegally bred!

They are now a banned dog in the UK and as such no more breeding is supposed to be done.

Quite right.

Unfortunately they are still being bred, smuggled into the country, etc. Did you watch that Panorama programme a few weeks ago, they are so easily smuggled in through customs, from Ireland & I think it was Helsinki or somewhere like that. The poor dogs aren't asking to be born, it's the evil people who claim dog fighting is a "sport". I couldn't watch in the end it was too upsetting. It's barbaric. Then all the poor other bull breeds get a slating in the press too.

No we don't have that many Panorama programmes shown over here. I can only imagine though

.

I saw loads of Pits when I was back in the UK last year (okay, so not in the best of areas, but still--they were there...).

I believe they can get away with it by passing the dogs off as "Irish Staffordshire Terriers" or even "American Bulldogs".

The pup may have been imported.

or it may have been a crossbreed and the owner was telling porkies to try and make herself look clever

Or Staffy x Lab. There is no test to prove otherwise.

Exactly! The ones that actually have an APBT are the ones that would never tell a stranger.

I would be 99% sure it was an pitbull pup, right size/colour/shape/look! She was a bit shocked I think that I asked, and hesitant about saying.
Not a staffie
. Just interested to know as thought they might be illegal.

Then that would have been illegal too!

It depends if they had the correct paperwork and licence.

def illegal if no lisence but there are loads round me that are being bred and are being crossed with rotties, dobs and other large breeds, which i think is stupid as they can be evil killing machines, but i think that is the point to be honest, and most of the people that have them are chavs around here, its a statement to them, however this area does often have a raid on them, just a shame that an illegal pitbull gets destroyed.

They are illegal yes, did you see it in Liverpool, cos daughter says there are loads of what appear to be pitbulls she has seen. Sadly, when you start doing dissections at uni you will probably find a lot of the dogs used are pitbull types. When she did her first ones last year it was just after the "amnesty" in Liverpool when many had been handed in to the dog pounds, and this was their sad end.

Pit Bulls are illegal, however if you cross staffie with american bull dog you get an almost identical looking dog. My friend had an unfortunate accident with her dogs before the were done and the resulting pups witch are now two years old look exactly like my 8yr pit bull x.

Presumably pit bull crosses are illegal too. If you are not supposed to breed from pitbulls that should be the end of it. But of course if it had been possible to enforce the law there wouldn't be any about now because the existing ones would have died of old age and there wouldn't be any young stock!

Yes but if pre DDA you had two 1st crosses or even a 3/4 and a 1st cross and bred that to a 1st cross (because it was legal to do so then) surely you will still have cross breds who have not been bred since the DDA was created, do you just shoot them all?

No of course not, the idea of the DDA was to stop them being bred and to be licensed, so presumably as long as a cross was licensed it would be legal. However how long ago was the DDA brought in, cos I think it was long enough ago for most pitbulls bred before it to be pretty doddery now. Just had a look, think DDA came in 1991, so any legally bred pitbulls or crosses would be about 16. By the way I think the DDA was a bad idea and a knee jerk reaction. As a breeder and owner of GSDs I think nearly all dog problems are down to the owners.

I dont know how the law stands now on pit bull x's but as i got mine from an RSPCA center when she was just 8months old and she is now 8yrs old and a big sofftie i would never let anyone try and take her from me.
