My ID was diagnosed with a small pitting edema about a month ago after he wasnt ridden for 5/6 weeks after all that snow and ice we had. i put a post on here when it happened as i didnt know much about it.

It was only small and i didnt think it was an issue. On friday when i got to him his whole sheath was swollen and the edema stretched from his sheath to the first (now large) edema at the front of his chest.
The vet came out and all his bloods are totally healthy so now they think it could be a tumour! His glands are up and a foreleg and hind leg (on different sides) are swollen too!

Has anyone experienced anything similar?
I am so worried, he goes in on tues for tests!
Fingers crossed!

I have known brood mares to have odema from their udders forward to between their front legs. Cutting their feed usually worked with them with no serious problems. Hope your boy is ok.

hi this happened to my lad,he went to equine hospital for test for tumours etc which all came back clear.at first his bloods were normal but then his protein levels started to decrease and diagnosed with colitis.he then started to suffer from regular bouts of spasmodic colic the only thing we could put it down to was he was colicing when the batch of haylage changed he is now on hay and a cereal free diet (alf alfa, fibre beet and blue chip) with brewers yeast and touch wood he has been fine since.i hope your boy is ok as i know what you are going through fingers crossed keep us posted xxxx

Well the scans showed a small amount of fluid and tissue in a chest cavity that normally shouldnt have any fluid in.

They have kept him in overnight now to do some x-rays in the morning to shed some light, its so frustrating!

will post again tomorrow when i have had the call!!

i had my horse on loan and about 3 months after he came back he took unwell and like dixie his sheath and abdomen became swollen. his protient levels became very low and he developed colitis. in his case it turned out to be a heavy worm burden. ( he was wormed when i brought him home for his loan home). get vets to do feacal tests as well just in case he is resistant to the wormers. however i don't think my boy was getting wormed properly if at all.

good luck and let us know how he gets on

Well its bad news! They found 2 large lumps inside Hugos right lung on the x-ray, he had a biopsy this afternoon and i have to wait 7-10 days to get the results.

If the lumps are malignant there is nothing they can do but if not they can try steroids to keep the swelling at bay but he wont get better!

I am totally gutted, i only bought him 6 months ago and he is the nicest, gentle horse i have known!

The vets have said that even a 5 stage vetting would not of picked it up as his bloods are normal. bad timing on my behalf eh!

Thanks for your replys.
