Just wondered if anyone could recommend any good place to ride in the Edinburgh area? A friend and I are really missing riding while we're at uni and fancy getting a bit of riding in during the term time.

Thanks.

not really any good places , you have tower farm & lasswade riding schools.

you can come play with jay

Thanks for the suggestions.

I've only ever heard bad reports about Tower Farm, so I've always been a little reluctant to go there. Nothing specific, just that it's not the best place. Do you think we'd be wise to ignore this and try it for ourselves?

I have a car so that's not a problem. I think I went to Lasswade a couple of years ago, but it was quite pricey.

Can you give us an idea of lesson prices at all?

I'd avoid both Tower and Lassswade

. The link I gave earlier has the price list on it. With a car your options are opened up more, I just can't think of any other places off the top of my head

Maybe we'll give Tower a try then, it can't hurt I suppose!

Jeez it's expensive to ride down here. I can have a private lesson on my horse with a very experienced dressage intructor at home of £14, though I have to pay for using the indoor school on top of that.

The only thing that puts me off Houston is it being so far away. I live at the East End of Edinburgh, so it's a fair hike over to it to go riding at.

There used to be a place on the Pentlands that did good hacking with Icelandics. Might still be there. Not big Horses but good fun, I went once a long time ago.

I learned to ride at Tower farm, 20 years ago, they only had about 15 Horses back then!!

The Pentland hills Icelandic place doesn't have the most experienced staff....so don't go if you're a novice....

I think as Cuffey has said you should join the Uni riding club then you would get taken by minibus to where they have their lessons and you would meet people with similar interests.

If you are in the east end of Edinburgh then perhaps try some of the places out in East Lothian? There is Atherstone, although I haven't been there for years and there are a few places around Gullane and North Berwick. It's an easy drive out of the city to there.

Houston attracts a specific type of person, I've found...

LOL!! What type?

Now don't be obtuse, Miss Tia. I'm sure the people were in business when you were deported to Canada.

LOL!! The people were barely in business when I went there about 30 years ago on their camp. What a grotty place it was! Seems that it has been done up a bit since I was there though...

Not any longer - the yard stopped doing treks this year and is now livery only.

Can't think of anywhere within easy reach of Edinburgh that hasn't been mentioned - except maybe Harelaw Stables at Longniddry.

Neither Tower Farm or Lasswade are fancy but they are close to Edinburgh and I think you can get a bus pretty close to both of them. I would say Lasswade for scenic hacks as you can ride within sight of Rosslyn Cathedral through some lovely woods. Tower Farm you can ride round the Braid Hills which arent very big and just the one track and you are still in the city. Both have slightly decrepit indoor schools which do the job. The Icelandics place at West Linton no longer operates as a riding school I think.
