Ok was doing a exercise a few weeks ago with my instructor a pole then a small fence the pole was not a placing pole it was more like a bounce - to try to get him to take off at the right place. Well bless him he didn't get it so was going to practice in the morning im sure she said it was a 7 yard distance does that sound about right. Usually I would text and ask but it is nye!!! Lol

I do not have a clue but I guess your instructor is old school is it was 'yards' LOL.

Nothing old school about using yards for distances, a horse stride is still based on yards not metres.

In answer to the OP 7 yards would mean the horse went over the pole, then put a stride in before the fence, not a bounce distance but a short one stride.

The conversion is easier in feet hence why used. 9ft vs 2.7m!
But I bet the top sjers work in m.

On the Continent that is probably true but not my experience here and in North America. I think they have a working knowledge of the conversions but they walk and set in whatever system they have learned in because their eye and pace will be largely habitual by the time they reach the top level.

Totally agree, I'm old (but not top level) and definitely find feet and yards so much easier and have to think to convert to metric - my brain was severely over taxed when doing my UKCC and EFI assessments!! I also feed in lbs but can just about manage horses weights in kg and pony heights in cm (horses are definitely still hands!)

I can only walk in feet as that is what I was taught to do as a child and that is what feels right - I would not be nearly as accurate walking in meters! But I can't see it really matters as the distances aren't different, just the measurements. If you have to convert there's an app for that. :)

I'm surprised how often I can put a pole down without walking and be very close to the distance I want - proof that these things become instinctual.
