My horse had a plait in her tail when I brought her in this evening. She was in last night and it wasn't there this morning so it has been done during the day. We are stabled in Bearsted (Maidstone) Kent. She was living out all the time up until Wednesday night, but now I am afraid to put her out at all! She is a 15.2 bay thoroughbred mare. She is out with 4 other mares, all of which are quite nice horses, but none of these had a plait. Does this mean my horse has been marked for theft? What should I do about it? Any advice welcome.
:(

To date there has been no known incidents of horses with plaited tails being stolen.
However I always strongly recommend that horses should be freezemarked on a part of their body which is visible when being ridden.
A freezemarked horse is easy to identify by anyone.

photo of plait please.
if it is a neat tidy plait a local horse mad girl did it. Find her and ask if she wants to pooh pick for money.
If it is asymmetric, complicated and wild the wind did it.

Wow thanks for all the sarcastic and patronising responses, they are really helpful and greatfully recieved when I'm worried about my horses safety. I never knew these forums were put here for people to be b*tchy and take the mickey out of people who wanted advice.

These boards are a useful source of information. A simple search would have told you all you needed to know and meant you didn't need to spam the boards with something that has already been done to death.

btw if you are seriously worried about someone stealing your horse it's probably best not to advertise its details, where its kept and your stabling plans.

On a serious note, i had a mare which i found had a plaited tail overnight. There where my 5 horses living out in a field furthest away from my house at the end of my property. (I have over 15acres). We have only a farmer as our nearest neigbhour with a fairly main road which runs along side our property. I brought her in that night and sat in a bush and waited. YES someone well 2 actually came and jumped over my gate and looked for her. One of them was so close to me i could here him talking and YES it was an irish accent. Yes i was ****ting myself and in the end one of them said well theres always next time and they went. So to all you lot out there taking the p1ss think twice next time you hear of something like this.

They're not useful if they're full of horrid people like you.
I did do a search for your information, however I like to get my information from lots of different sources as then you generally get a well balanced set of facts you can then asses and come to a properly informed conclusion. The only conclusion I've come to is that I wont bother posting on here in future!

Thanks for this, that's horrendous, you must have been petrified. Glad they didn't manage to get your horse. We went up to the field last night and checked at 10 and 1 in the morning but nothing seemed amis. That's the end of her summer of living out though poor thing :(

But if you'd done the search you'd have found even more replies from a broader range of people.

So nix123, how did you prevent them from coming back "next time"?

Oh ok i'm a happy bunny again now thanks :D I find you get a minority of people who try their upmost to belittle or be just plain rude to others. I ignore them and know i'm a better person than them, as i would never want to hurt someone else's feelings. Dont let this put you off posting on here though, there are a load more nicer, much kinder people on here. :o

You can't, can you. But i no longer leave any of them out overnight in the bottom field anymore. If they are living out i'll put them down there during the day, but bring them up to the on near the house. I also leave the dogs out at night sometimes, we have a little paddock thats dog proof, so if anyone does come they'll hear the dogs bark. Two mahoosive German Sheperds. There's no cure, if someone wants something bad enough, they'll find a way. No harm in making it as hard as hell for them though.

Jeez, if you don't like the question, don't bother answering. I can only think that those who answer in a rather less-than-helpful manner have far too much free time on their hands.

I didn't like my pony being on google street view as it showed that not many houses were around, even though there was one by the gateway (which was down a drive), and that neighbour notices any car driving through at an odd time of night. I knew I was being silly, but I still didn't like it.

You can't blame the OP for being worried about her horse's security!

Yes it seems you do Nix, I can't quite see the point as I always try to help out when I can, I don't patronise people for not knowing something that is obvious to me - not everyone can know everything. I hope there are many more people like you on here, it would be a much nicer place. I supposed you always get the small minded ones though, that's life. xx

Agreed! Thank you for a normal and polite response :) it seems they are quite hard to come by at the moment! x

I've not read all the replies, but owning a gypsy cob who seems to be pretty desirable, I have to say it would worry me. I know that's no help, but if it was Shy, i would just be stepping up security.

Yes I have, lots of extra checks and in at night. Luckily the yard has CCTV so hopefully that would act as a deterrant. The problem is as Nix said earlier if they want it that much they will just take it. Fingers crossed nothing comes of it. Your cob looks absolutely gorgeous :)

Ignore the rude people OP. Unfortunately it's something you cannot avoid in the horsey world.

If you are worried about the horses could you put a sign on the gate or along the fencing maybe that says CCTV in operation or Neighborhood watch in operation (no pun intended :p )? Or some other kind of deterrent? I too would be worried so don't feel bad for asking the question. x

Ah thank you. We have problems around Appleby time, and he's been know to be hidden in my YO's garden. I don't care what anyone says, anyone who can be bothered to climb into a field and plait a horse's mane or tail has to be a bit weird. Shy can get tangles, but I know the difference between these and a plait. x
