I have been asked to help plait up a Clydie for Melton heavy horse show this Sunday, but we are unsure how to plait the mane roll in. We have a 3 section woollen mane plait but searches online have only turned up the 2-section method which apparently isn't correct for the UK.

Would much appreciate any pointers!

This may be completely irrelevant (really, really sorry if it is!) but you could try a running plait? Plaited a Welsh Cob with a very thick/long mane and it looked really nice. Not sure if it's acceptable showing though...
Here's a picture anyway - good luck with him!

There's a specific way of plaiting clydies, this is how it should look:

You braid in 3 hanks of wool but we are unsure how to plait it in securely

Appreciate the suggestion though, thanks anyway :)

hello :)
i can't find any decent pics :( the pic you have found is much better than any i have , i thought i had some close ups of him half platted
never mind ill try and explain the best i can

we used red and blue wool so i had two red bits and one blue
put the pom pom end right up behind the bridle path and put it a little further forward than where you want it to sit as it will slip back slightly
put one red and one blue bit (or one of each of your colors) over the other side of the neck , so you have one red bit on this (off ) side and two bits on the side furthest away from you

then it is a little bit like a normal running plait but you obviously don't plait the whole mane
grab the one red bit with a tiny piece of hair of the very top of the mane then grab the blue bit from the other side and pull it over the red bit/piece of mane you now have in your hand and wrap/plait it
now pull the red bit (the piece with the mane plaited in)under the blue bit and put it over the other side of the neck
then pick up another tiny piece of mane with the blue bit and repeat all the way down the mane keeping the plait as far onto the top as you can and pulling/pushing it straight as you go

to add the flights (sticky up feather like things) simply plait them in as you go with each blue bit then you will get an even space between each flight
if there going into harness stop plaiting half way down the mane before where the collar will lie and just plait the remaining wool straight down using a couple of single strands to tie it off
if there not going in harness just keep going down the mane like the pic

we used to stand on a big table type mounting block so you could keep hold of the mane/plait as you go down the mane and not have to get down and climb back up again hence let go of the plait because i couldn't reach the mane from the floor !

saw dust is very handy , we used to use it to get there feathers clean and dry

are you going to a big show where there will be other heavy turnouts , if you are just ask them and tell them your stuck :)
they are the nicest bunch of people you will meet in the horsey world , we used to have a great day they all help each other , share picnics and gin etc ;)
we were normally the first on the field and the last to leave , here are some poor quality pics , these are shires but the turnout is the same

i kept my horse on the yard they were from and used to help at the more local events
sadly the boys are now retired , the horses are too old , the driver is too old and the dray was getting a little tired too, i do miss it but i have some lovely memories :)
