For the little welsh C my sister used to hunt I'd put in a tight running plait and hope for the best- his mane was about a foot long and very thick (he was only 13hh, so his mane came well past his neck!) and it used to tie her hands up when they jumped if she wasn't careful!

Ta da! It's really easy to do as well, I can manage it with just about any mane longer than 3 inches, and if it's thick and wiry it's even easier. Just like a tail plait, only without the fiddliness- this took about 3/4 mins to do :D

That's the neatest running plait i've ever seen! Tell me, how do you do it like that? All the ones i've seen seem to be along the bottom edge of the mane and drop out after 10 minutes!

It is a matter of where you take the hair from. I am probably not explaining well but I can see fron this picture the owner has taken the hair and plaited from each side of the crest as oppoesed to along side of it. If I need to do stickick up plaits to give a neck more shape i used the same principle. Not too difficult on a small pony you are already above its neck but not so easy on a very large hunter!

Thank you! I'm no great shakes on a horse but when it comes to making them look smart I'm pretty decent!

I brushed the mane so I could run my fingers through easily, but didn't use any products. I prefer the mane to be greasy as it sticks better. At the top, take 3 sections about an inch long, and do the first twist of the plait. Then, take another one inch segment and add it into your next twist, keeping it pulled taught at all times so the plait stays to the crest. Keep repeating the whole way down until the bottom when you run of out mane to add in. Then plait the three segments your holding to the very end and secure very tightly. Tuck this under you running plait and sew it into place so it's doesn't pop out.

It's easy once you've practised a bit and it does look fantastic on chunkier ponies- normal plaits can look a little lost I think!

No, all on one side- can't be faffed with doing anything else as his mane was loose for the stressage and there was only a 10 minute changeover period before she had to jump him. I just plait very tightly!

tried a running plait didnt work so tried one on each side still didnt work lol if your pony has as much hair as this then it is ment to be that way let is flow and at least you have something to hold on to over the jumps ;-)
