Please help..
Finlay is a coloured cob of uncertain parentage. He has got a really wide mane base which is really hard to get into plaits. Last season I gave up and hogged it off. I have let it grow back as I did not like the way it looked or felt on my hands and I felt awful in the summer because of the flies and his lack of fringe! I definitely dont want to hog it again but sadly it is now thicker than ever and about 4 inches long. I just cant get it into plaits. Last week I tried a running plait which looked great but the little bu***r rubbed it out on the way to the meet so we arrived with a scruffy permed look. Help please - it's putting me off going out.

Not much you can do but wait another six months! A running plait on a thick main needs length, I used to use a lot of bands on each plait which looked awful close up, but seemed the only practical solution. A lot of very cheap hair gel might help too.

If he has a really thick crest the trick is to clip the underside off so you are in effect hogging half of it. It you keep the rest well pulled you won't have a problem. You do have to keep on top of the clipped part though.

The above!

If he has a thick mane that isn't destined to plait then no amount of pulling will do it. So you either need to hog it all off or hog the under half off.
when I bought my incredibly tidy looking horse (in winter) he had this done. I grew it out as I didn't think it very proper..l then I realised why they had done it and now take a small amount off the underside as his mane is terribly coarse thick and wiry, hogging isn't an option as not the right sort for it so this has been my only option and works well.

I have the same problem, the only way I can is to split it into about 20 and thread it and hair gel it! I do it the night before and it lasts all the next day until I take them out!
His mane is very short atm too!

I would hog the underneath. You need to be careful not to clip the coat as it will show when plaited but it really helps when plaiting. It will need a fair amount of regular upkeep! X
