My pony has a long mane (to bottom of neck), and when I plait, they do end up looking a bit like a row of pumpkins! Would it still be smarter to plait for hunting or shall I leave down? She is Part bred Welsh Cob so native type.
Not that I am a lazy moose at all.....although do think that plaiting is smarter, it's just I think sometimes mine make her look less smart than she would do au natural!
Last time I did a running plait but she rubbed some of that out on way and I didn't have time to re-do, at least with individual plaits they can be repaired individually

If you dont have a full welsh mane i would say plait.
If your plaits look too big you prob need to pull her mane a bit more

I wouldn't bother with normal plaits in her mane. Either do the running plait & tie her so she can not rub it or do not plait at all. That is my personal opinion anyhow!

There are lots of ways to plait. If your horse has a long mane and you don't want to trim it, plait it down and then just fold it up once, so you have a line of plaits that are all the same length, maybe 10cm long. If you look at old racing prints, the race horses used to be plaited like that. You just want to look smart and functional after all.

I had someone plait Daisy's mane in a running plait for me and it was really helpful to not have it flapping around my hands as we rode. I'd try and plait and see if there is a way you can stop her rubbing

Thank you all for your replies. I don't really want to pull/thin her mane but will attempt to plait it to the best of my ability! If not, hopefully she won't look too bad, it's a pretty mane!
Thanks again (And I'm sure I will have a lovely time - thanks!)
