Is there a knack to plaiting huge tails? D and I are going hunting for the first time in January and I don't want everyone to think she's a scruffy little bog pony so I'm determined to plait. The problem is that she has about enough tail for three or four normal horses and when I try to plait it I end up with really fat sausages rather than the nice slim plait that I'm aiming for.

Is there a secret to making a really huge tail look nice and neat?

i would just take extra small bits of tails so you can run down the tail further without it looking fat. i take it your just doing a usual plait down the tail??

Why don't you just dampen the top of her tail and then leave a tail bandage on for a short while? She'll look much smarter and it'll save you having to worry about plaiting her tail

As sallypops says, jsut take tiny bits to add to your plait so that the bulk of the tail is held in the middle of the plait. If you feel it getting too fat, still add a section, but drop some fo the hair that was already in the plait - hope that makes sense! Hopefully if the tail is thick it's also nice and long, which I think makes it easier.

You could thin the tale at the dock a little by pulling as long as you dont break too much hair, as that will just make it spikey. I can plait my dales ponys tale and that is a monster but i always thin it first. Apart from that just literally take strands from as far underneith as you can as everyone has already said.
