I am slightly confused about weather to plait or not? I have recieved a dress code ect, from my hunt and it says horses should be plaited, but my pony is M&M should I plait? If I have to plait would I have to do his tail as well? Also if I had to do his mane would it me acceptable to do it in a running plait or not?
Thanks :)

I always plait my traditional coloured cob (in sig) because his mane gets dirty and orange from the soil (he's very fond of mud :)) and it looks neater plaited without having to subject either of us to freezing cold water of a winter's evening  I do a running plait and it looks fab. I always plait his tail, too, because it touches the ground and I don't want to cut it. I do a polo pony style plait, as in, a normal plait then fold it up and secure with black tape.

Here's a pic of us doing inter hunt relay. Please ignore numpty position, he was being very nappy and leaping everything, throwing me around. You can see the plaiting quite clearly, though it was done very quickly on the lorry so isn't very neat. Click on Equestrian events, Vale of Glamorgan inter hunt relay and we're on the first page, the only coloured so easy to see. There's one side on of us jumping where you can see the right side of us:

I dont plait my M&M's mane, but he always has his tain up, like Pumpkinino said, Mainly because once we've been out for a good few hours and his thick, long, tail gets wet and muddy it annoys him and he tries to kick it of him, And it cant gt caught on bushes, and hedges etc if its folded up :)

I think you'd probably get away with it on an M&M??

I certainly wouldn't start lopping anything off! Maybe ring the sec and check. :)

I don't plait my Sec D either - my excuse being that I'd have to pull her mane to get it into plaits and it wouldn't grow back in time for the spring shows. Her mane is neat and trimmed though and I lay it down with a water brush before we get to the meet. No-one seems bothered as long as horse/tack/jacket are clean and you are otherwise neat and tidy.

I have never understood why people get so hung up on correct/incorrect turnout for hunting.

As long as you are neatly and safely turned out what does it matter whether you are plaited/not plaited, wear a black or tweed jacket etc etc

Surely the main thing is that we get people out hunting

Suppose it is like any sport, people would like to adhear to the correct dress code. Extreme example but you wouldn't go to a dressage comp in a XC shirt, it's no less safe, just doesn't look right.
Of course it doesn't matter, if you are plaited or not, just looks nicer. My hunt would prefer you are plaited, but we have had some newcomers out, un-plaited and they only comment is "great to see you and hope we will again".
