Plaiting!

i need to plait my horses tail up, i am fed up of coming back with a tail that has been dragged through hedges and looks as though i have dipped it in a bucket of mud! lol.
So any tips/ideas/pictures on how i can plait it down, french plait style and then roll it up so it looks nice!?
