I ride a very stocky little 13.2hh cobby pony with a very thick neck and mane that doesn't really lend itself to elegant plaiting. Do I still need to plait him for hunting even though he's a native? I can Arab plait him but that only serves to emphasise his already chunky neck!

I'm not sure what you mean by arab plait? Sorry..hairy cob owner so no plaiting usually!! ;) But I usually do a running plait on my lad, it does make his neck seem even bigger but it keeps his rather HUGE mane out of my hands and is alot neater than leaving it natural. I've never had anyone tell me it's not correct and I noticed a regular had her cob done in the same way.

hmmm i have been wondering this as my dales mane reaches the top of her legs (wont hog it taken 5 years to grow) and is so thick i have to do a running plait both sides and still loos messy think she looks smarter being what she is a mountain and moorland. plus i show her during the summer so cant really take the hair off

an arab plait is much the same as a running plait AFAIK.

either way, they keep the mane out of your reins when the horse is hot and sweaty, and most hunts appreciate the effort you have gone to to be smart and tidy for the meet.
