plaiting ....

nope its not hogged lol otherwise i would have a huge problem :P

Its about 4 inches long .. shes a yearling (nearly) I dont obviously want the balls to be too big thats why i ask, shes due to go to balmoral for the inhand class . She really didnt like her mane being pulled and would ideally like to get another inch of but she will probably have to be given a light sedation .

I like them to be about 4-5 inches long for plaiting. This length gives a bit of substance and makes them more manageable. Too short and you have trouble holding them together. Too long and you end up with huge plaits....not what you want with a youngster. Small and petite is smart.

About 4 inches for mine. I find the plaits are nicer when the mane is a bit longer but quite thin - then you don't get big plaits but they are managable. For me, thinning is def the key to nice small plaits not having the mane really short as many think is the way!!

Yeah .... I will probably have to try and thin it as it is quite thick . There is a great wee comb out at the minute I would have to say its better than the solo comb . Its about £3.00 although the blades blunt very quickly its not too bad once i got using it right . Shes grand trimming around her ears but is a right bitch lol when it comes to her mane shaking her head like a demented horse lol ( i know shes a baby ) patience was never my strong point lol .

We shall get it done im stubborn thats for sure

Is it even number of plaits or odd ?

I always pull to thin it - any comb you use you can tell imo and I hate it!!
Although the done with a comb / cut look seems the done thing in SJing atm.
Agree about the odd no too!!

I read an interesting article on an autopsy on a horse where the mane had been platted very tightly and it showed quite severe brusing to the horse. Due to this fact, I have always tried very hard to make my plaits neat and avoid causing discomfort to the horse.

....also, if they are slightly more loose then they will flow nicely with the movement of the horse's neck and body. Too tight and it causes discomfort and irritation for the horse and they will start to look shabby after an hour of so of movement.
