Depends on what effect your trying to achieve. I'm bone idle and have better things to do with my time than plait, personally I think they're bloody marvellous!
No, they are not right for 'proper' showing but I think they are fine for dressage/SJ/hunting, save me hours and are a bonus on cold mornings when you don't want to have cold wet fingers.
They work best on a well pulled mane, stay in all day and I don't think anyone noticed the difference TBH. My cat also thinks they make a great toy, he's carrying one round the house as we speak!
