So I thought this was all a load of rubbish, people mistaking tangles for plaits until this morning I went out and there is an unmistakable plait in one of my horses manes. Is there any evidence that this is being done as a marker for the one to be stolen or is it just people trying to freak others out?? If the latter then it's working - I've rung the police and they have been very supportive, even if it is just a prank it means someone has been into our place and around the horses.
Any advice welcome!!

I always wondered whether this was done on purpose to upset people as there are easier ways of identifying a horse for stealing, but it's horrible either way!

Not sure what to advise! Can you increase yard security, e.g. padlocks (on both ends of the gates so they can't be lifted off their hinges), more lights if possible, more checks if there is someone living on site?

The same thing happened to my mare last year...it was odd and a bit spooky...parts of her mane were plaited, and the more I took it out, the more it kept happening. The police didn't take us seriously, I was scared as I work full time and we live in the middle of the country...my other pony was left alone, and the whole thing stopped as suddenly as it began after about 3 weeks of it happening daily....my mare was pretty jumpy after the whole thing, and her mane was in such a state I had to pull most of it out..she is quite a big pony, thus it must have been teenagers/adults to do it and they must have kept her amused with treats as she hates standing still...I stepped up security, large padlocks everywhere, told the neighbours who did hourly checks on them for me, but I still can't understand why anyone bothered to do it for so long.

Gosh you must be really worried - are you chipped and freezemarked (not you your horse) ! If not get that done freezemark will give you signs to put up also the biggest padlocks money can buy or change which field they are in maybe ?

I hope everything is ok - where abouts are you ?

I'm in the north east of Scotland. The police are being really helpful. The horses are microchipped but advertising that fact might be a good idea!
