I have a 13hh pony that I want to sell as my neice is too big now for him, he is an ace little chap but is developing a habit where he plants and refuses to move when bringing him in. With little kids he has even started whirling about at this point too. He is fine if you show him who the boss is(!) but can see problems selling him like this and its a shame as he's fine otherwise and i only want a good home, not alot of dosh for him. Any ideas how to sort him out??

Does he does this when he is alone? Could you possible start brining him in with another horse to encourage him to walk forwards? Personally if he continues to walk forwards when you show him who is boss I would continue to do this and possibly try bringing him half way through his turn out time, then turning him back out - lots and lots of repetition will help him when he realizes that you are the boss and he has to come in properly.
What do you/others do to him when he comes it, is it always work if you you could bring him in and just spend a bit of time with him so he doesn't always associate leaving the field and his friends with work.
I hope you manage to find something that works with him and find him a lovely home.

You have had lots of good suggestions for making him think coming in is a GOOD thing, which should help.

I know of quite a few childrens ponies who are difficult to bring in and turn out, some needing a bridle and an adult, but the ponies are brilliant in every other way, and when they were being sold to their new owners, the "problem" was discussed up front, and the new owners were quite happy to buy the pony despite the habit, so dont despair.

thanks all- he has only recently started doing it- he is 9 now. Only does it when on his own, I shall just tell potetial buyers and understand he may take longer to sell because of it....

I'd spend a few weeks bringing him in just to feed on some days - my mare was a bit like this when I got her and she now associates coming in with food - always the way to a pony's heart!

Pressure halters are always a good idea with a stubborn pony too.
