Hi all,

Just got a new cob and we're at the stage where he's starting to test me out.

He's started to plant himself and when I ask him to go forward he backs up. It takes a lot of persuasion to move him on.

Any suggestions welcome

Circles just keep him moving rather than planting and eventually he will realise that less effort to go forward or if he will only go backwards then reverse in the direction u were originally headed. Whatever u do, do not turn round and make sure your rides are loop ones rather than there and back.

My cob also did this in the the school the first few times I took him in, very frustrating and no amount of encouragement made any difference.

Just had to sit it out as amymay says, eventually he got bored, (took a good 25mins though) decided to give in, and he has never tried it again in nearly 8 years.

Cobs are great tho aren't they, gotta love em! Good luck.

Our boy plants through being inexperienced,it can be frustrating when he just will not go forward! But no amount of getting cross with him will do anything. Waiting him out, turning him in a circle, reassuring him if he's scared or one good kick generally does the job :)

I have found this to be very effective : when the horse plants do nothing other than keep your leg on firmly and keep increasing leg pressure until he moves. Once he moves, leg off immediately as a reward. You might find it takes a few minutes the first time but they start to work it out quite quickly.
