Hi all

I have a TB that has a scab on his hock which won't heal. Despite having a huge bed which covers all the stable floor he keeps taking the top off the scab everyday and then it gets full of mud when he goes out and rolls. I've tried all sorts to stop it - hock boots end up round his fetlocks by the morning and I've given up trying to spray anything on it as he's a kicker. Its only the size of a 5p but is obviously sore for him.

Having looked on the internet and come up with not a lot - I had a brainwave of putting a square of elastoplast or similar which is stretchy and will move when he flexes his joint to protect it. I'd probably take it off so the air could get to it in the day but then started thinking is it a ridiculous idea?!

use a disposable nappy and surgical tape-when you want to remove it use surgial spirit to take the stickyness out of the tape before pulling off

Hi

Thanks for your replies - the tubigrip one sounds like a great idea so will definitely try that one....and I love the smell of surgical spirit!

CPT - thanks for that suggestion however he's a nightmare to spray anything on to and I'm forever having to dodge his back legs when applying anything to it like creams/sprays etc. He'll let you bandage it etc but as soon as the sprays appear he turns into devil horse!

Tensoplast is super sticky stuff you could wrap round the top of the bandage
Allevyn are like plasters, if I bandage a hock after injections I would put one of these on then Soffban then vetwrap.
You could also try a neoprene hock boot.
There is a boot specificaly for this but can't for the life of me remember what they are called!

Ooh yes I have a pressage bandage from when he had an op on his other hock - forgot all about that! He's currently got on a dressing held on with surgical tape which looks pretty sturdy. Whether its still there in the morning remains to be seen but if it just stops him taking the top off for a few days it might just help it heal a bit quicker. Thanks for all your helpful replies!
