Over the last 6 months I have twice found shredded green plastic bale binding in my Dengie Hi Fi Lite .

The bits are thin, about the same colour as the green fibre in the bag and vary in length from about half an inch to about 8-9 inches. The short bits are quite hard to see at first.

I phoned Dengie to complain and the girl I spoke to said yes, they were aware of the problem but as the bale binders are plastic any bits that get into the product are not picked out by the magnets that they use to pull out any metal, and although the binders are removed by hand and counted, sometimes bits get through the process.

I dont know if a horse would eat the plastic and whether it would do any damage if it was eaten, but frankly I'm not prepared to take the risk.

Haven't seen any in the stuff we've used, however if I did I'd be on the phone and complaining. Surely plastic can get stuck in the digestive system?

I'm hoping that plastic doesnt get stuck in the gut because I had fed about half a bag before I found the plastic on both occassions.. so I may well have fed some plastic unwittingly ...

Id be really interested if someone out there knows the answer because until I found the plastic, I really liked Dengie products .... so did the horses.. its been hard to find something they like as much...!

My mare once ate a plastic bag she found with apples in by the time i got to her not much of the bag left, she was fine no harm done to her at all and that was a good 3 years ago now.

I also found some plastic in a bale of Hi Fi Original. I spoke to them and was told that the (alfalfa - possibly can't remember exactly what component it was) arrives at them baled in green netting. They rely on human eyes when the netting is removed (as it will not be picked up by the magnets).

I've not found it since, fortunately, but have been ultra careful to check!
