My brothers dog has just been operated on for Pyometra, he has not been able to talk to a vet yet, "just a dizzy nurse". She said that Casey is awake but groggy, op went well but there was more blood than normal. Does anyone have any idea why this may be? Would be really grateful for any advice. We are all worried sick :(

Hi ,my bitch had pyo op in feb ,she also was groggy n took a few days to get back to fairly normal ,she had a little pus but my vet said this can b normal
My bitch was operated in the afternoon ( had to pick her up to take to main surgery ,to keep costs down as she's not insured ) also they showed me wot they took out ,,huge swollen tubes n just starting to leak ,so we caught it just in time
The following day she came home
They soon recover ,,how old was the bitch n has she had a litter just out of interest
Try not to worry ,was she really poorly beforehand

Thanks for the reply. So nice to hear that your girl is OK.

She is a 9yr old Staff and she had a litter years ago. Brother said she was quiet yesterday so he took her to the vets last night (as usual she was remarkably better as soon as she realised she was at the vets. New best friends and all that!!!). They gave her a painkiller and something to reduce temp. He took her back this morning and she was operated on this afternoon. I was just a bit worried about the nurse saying she had more blood in there than was normal. Waiting to hear back from my brother for an update.

Older bitch spays can be like that - bleed a bit more than a younger bitch. Nurse was probably just telling you that because it was part of the process - but if there was something to actually worry about, the vet would have phoned you rather than leave it for a nurse to worry you. At least that's the way it'd work at the practice where I work. Don't stress too much. She'll be fine. But glad she's been operated, Pyos are nasty things!

Thank you so much :)

Our little pug came down with sealed pyometra and underwent emergency surgery this Saturday just gone, she's pretty much back to her normal self although she is urinating and drinking more but the vet said this is normal after the op and with her being on the antibiotics, she eating well and is a lot brighter, she was loosing a bit of clear discharge from her lady area for the first few days but the kept her in for the night to observe and she came home the day after surgery, her check up was last night and the vet was very happy with her recovery.

Good to hear your girl is feeling better:)

Casey is OK today, vet was pleased with how the op went though apparently she lost quite a lot of blood. She is home now and feeling pretty sorry for herself still. I am sure she will be bouncing around soon enough. Its bloody horrible seeing her feeling so rubbish:(

Pleased to hear she is feeling a lot better and after her post op checks she will be able to return to normal exercise.. not all us that work at the vet surgery are "dizzy" :D

Although it's sometimes very useful when people are asking questions (on the phone, for example) to say "I'm just the dog groomer - let me take a message and get someone to get back to you" and that usually stops the rapid fire questions. No one ever expects a dog groomer to know much - so I can play dumb all I like! It's great! :D
