I'm sorry to have a bit of a rant at you, well not really a rant, but I fell off my horse yesterday and am quite sore despite having my hat on!
We were jumping and he got very strong into the first fence and got too close:

He jumped it anyway:

Although unseated me along the way and proceeded to gallop to the second:

Being so bl**dy honest he jumped it anyway:

Resulting in the pole getting caught between his legs:

And us both ending up on the floor, Red landed on me apparently and the force pushed my face into the sand:

I've had this horse for over a year now and we know each other brilliantly, fortunately I was wearing my Champion Ventair hat, the head band at the front now looks like this  :

And today my face looks like this:

I know it doesn't look particularly bad at the moment but I can to you it feels worse than it looks!
Despite wearing my hat I have a bruise on my forehead(next to my fingers), and a lovely black eye brewing, a bruise coming over my cheek and bridge of my nose, a scratched upper lip(next to my nose) and a sore neck :( No, I wasn't wearing a BP but don't feel it would really have done anything this time anyway.
I can't imagine what would've happened if I wasn't wearing my hat as I have a bit off a head ache now, have been to the hospital and the soreness in my neck is just muscle damage and my face speaks for itself, will post more pics when the bruises really start to come out! Red came out nearly unscathed, he has a scratch on his shoulder and and abrasion, like my lip almost, above his right eye.
Bearing in mind we were jumping like this 5mins before this happened:

Oh you poor thing, so sorry to hear this happen. Hope you recover quickly.

Ive just bought myself a lovely Champion Ventair hat this weekend and its the best hat Ive had yet!

I never go without.

Thanks, so do I, off to get a new hat in a few days and will definately be getting the same again, you can't even tell from the outside though! Might send it off to Champion for analysing :) I only go without when bareback in from the field but now realise how incredibly stupid I have been, knowing the horse doesn't really mean anything :(

oh my god i want your horse...how honest to jump the second element?!
that does look like a painful fall! (i had one myself yesterday and also ended up facefirst into the sand...new hat for me too i think!)

Thanks diggerbez, although I would have rather jumped it without him this time :p Would've saved us both from ending up on the floor and covered in sand :sigh:
Poor you! It's a good excuse though, was after a new one anyway, it used to be black and is now brown and about 2 and 1/2 years old so needs replacing anyway :D

OP there is a thread running on latest News 'Hat or not hat...that is the question'. If you could post your pics on there you may change a few (the minority's) minds? Hope you can and hope you feel better soon. Best wishes

I feel your pain!! Horse and I fell in water last week, i ended face down in the mud. My air jacket went off, thought i was fine, looked up to see where the horse was, and got smacked in the face by her hoof! Typical! My face is still sore, and to top it all off i had just bought a new hat (good in a way, my heads fine) but now worried i could of damaged the new one. Horses are never simple. Hope you feel better soon. :)

Sorry about your fall, what an honest horse though!! I have 2 champion ventairs one for home and one for events- although both mine are skulls.

I am guilty however of riding hatless- although only on select horses which I know I shouldnt despite how much I trust as your post shows!

Hope the pain settles and your back riding soon!!

Thanks smac, he really is a star, although I wish it was just me that went flying over the jump  I love mine, even more so now I know it's done it's job :)
Please wear one! I would hate to hear of you getting hurt riding hatless on the horse you love, I know just how tempting it is and how safe you feel in the saddle of the horse you love most but at the end of the day it's just not worth it ;)
Thank you :)

Bumping up before I go to rest my poor face and neck, hopefully will come back feeling much better and my face will have gone down :p I will be back with a new hat tomorrow :D

So glad you have come through (relatively!) unscathed. Even bareback in from the field, while lovely to do, hats are absolutely vital. I know of a young lady who was a lovely young rider, and knew her pony inside out. Unfortunately, she did something very similar, which she had done numerous times, and had a dreadful, freakish accident, from which she did not come through. It just isn't worth the risk.
