Please any advice!!

Hey!

My boy Ollie, who ive had for 2/3 months now and is going great... well i think he is sore in the mouth.. when i push either side of his mouth, and inch or two up from the crease of his mouth he pins his ears and shakes his head. Clearly hurts, my cousin thinks it his teeth, but lady i got him from said he had them just done?

so feel i dont want to waste money getting someone out for his teeth when its just been done, is there anything else it could be, else ill have to get vet out for his teeth??

i noticed it when putting his bridel on but he also does it without it on. there is two little bold patches just below sore point, nothing touches there to rub.. so bit confused about it? is it his teeth, something else? how is he getting rub marks etc...

also i rode him in a 4 ring gag today for the first time with d rings, any advice on riding him in this bit? found him much easier to stop, although cousin, aunty etc said im way to gentle on his mouth and can be a little more firm?? he didnt canter off with my today on the roads and felt more in control, he also brought his head down a lot without me having hardly any contact and just twiddling, felt he was much easier to hadle, and only had to apply tiny pressure to slow him, but any advice on how to ride in this bit, would be great!! thank you!!

Get his teeth checked even if he had them done recently (and you don't know for certain ), they may not have been done by an expert.
Check the bit size and bridle fit and have a few lessons with an RI to get the two of you working well together to iron out the quirks that may be partially down to a new partnership.
 
Sore patches near the mouth would suggest the bit rubbing. Check your fit. Your new bit sounds really quite strong so that would be why your horse is tucking into his chest. I would ask for a good RI recommendation on here and work from there.
 
Agree with what the other have said about getting an dentist out, they can check his teeth and may give you some reasons what could be making him sore in certain areas. The bald patches could indicate he's been ridden in an incorrectly sized bit, check the size of your current one. I personally wouldn't be riding him in a harsher bit until you find the cause of his pain.
 
ok ill call tomo to book in for his teeth... i agree, last owners said he just had them done, but i think it might have been awhile ago.

and his bold patches... i kinda dont know, nothing on his bridal is near them, nor his head collar.. not a clue on that!!?

i was thinking my vet does teeth, if i got him out and its not his teeth atleast being a vet he may be able to sort it out if its something else... or know what caused these bold patches.

with putting him on a stronger bit... he ept just cantering off down the road, i tried all different things to stop it... and he just keeps doing it.. the other day it was down hill and a sharpe bend, could have been bad if a car was there.

i tried hacking alone, company, differnet routes, loads of transitions to keep him thinking, going for lessons, etc and he just keeps doing it... today with the gag he didnt do anything, hardly had to touch his mouth and he just responded... i didnt ride with loads of contact as worried it would hurt i could just feel his mouth a little... it should hurt unless i use it?? should it? so f i yanked on it then it would hurt but as long as im gentle i thought it shouldnt actually do anything if im not applying any pressure??

Good that your getting someone out to look at his teeth, you can never be too sure when believing sellers!! ;)
Some vets are good with teeth and I get what you mean about diagnosing the mouth problem otherwise, but i would always get a dentist out to check the teeth, you could get the vet to check to see if he's been done recently (and if not get your dentist) and if he has been done ask about the bald patches.
We had a pony at our yard that had the corners of his mouth turn a different colour to his coat, he was black and he had little white patches, his bit was awful, falling apart, so think this was the issue.
If he's new to you it could have been from the precious owners/bit, and the cantering off down the road on a hack could be a coincidence to all the above. I would re assess his bit once you have seen vet/dentist, then once you know what's going on in his mouth you can decide what sort of bit he will need. :)
