My gosh, there just are not the words That is awful!!! I tell you what i am making a mental list of all the countries i won't visit, due to the way they treat their animals and i'm fast running out of places i can visit. I don't even like living in the UK sometimes. People are just so power mad and think we can treat any living being in whatever way we like
frown.gif

What the??? Did the horse run into a gate at the end of the track or something? And how much blood??
frown.gif
I want to scream get a vet at the screen!

I have just seen the video and saw the poor injured horses. BUT you really musn't tar a whole nation because of what happened here. I know lots of italian people who would not treat their horses badly at all.
Just think of all the animal cruelty cases in the UK! Do you want people to stop visiting here because of those?

What you say makes sense. I guess if people that didn't live in this country, saw a clip of dog fighting or something, which does happen here. They may think we are all like that, and clearly we are not all like that. It just makes my blood boil that some people in this world have no compassion or empathy for our fellow earthlings.

i totally agree with this, sounds horrible (don't have the guts to watch it) but it doesn't mean all italians are like this

Our people are also capable of some nasty animal cruelty in this country too, however I believe the Italians are indifferent at best to horse welfare and what to do with lame or unwanted horses .. I firmly believe any nation that eats horse , human, dog or cat flesh is yet to become civlilzed......

I'm sorry - but I don't understand what I'm watching. Some sort of road race, with the animals injured towards the end? What happened to them afterwards. There seemed to be a genuine concern for the horses. Although I didn't translate the website........

I've read lots of reports on this very forum of neglect and abuse of horses in the UK... seems the whole lot of you must be heartless hatefull so and so's from the looks of it huh?
I'm going to suggest to my fellow Australians that we not only stop visiting the UK, but reverse the old process and start exporting our unwanted trouble makers to YOUR shores...

Oh wait...we do that already .....and call them "cricket teams" and "rugby teams" etc....

Honestly, you start making stupid, wild and very wide generalisations you make a mockery of yourself and lose the respect of those you are trying to influence. Better to stick to facts and maybe focus a little closer to home on your own back yard which has big enough issues!

Nations that eat horse aren't civilised? Sorry but as much as I don't eat, and wouldn't eat horse, it's a cheap, healthy and plentiful meat and as long as its raised ethically I don't get what the big deal is.

Which nations eat humans??

Just because a nation eats a meat that we in this country find abhorant - doesn't mean that they are uncivillised.

It is the manner in which they treat their animals that makes a country uncivillised.

True. It's about time the british became aware of this fact.
The video whoever is horrenedous, and the translation shows this is a regular race where some simple precautions and VETERINARY prescence would help enormously.
There is horse and animal cruelty/abuse of horrendous magnitude in every country

Whilst it horrifies me, it doesnt suprise me.

Where my dad lives, the young boys (aged from about 10 or so) pit stray dogs against each other for fun. Adults see no problem with this, they are stray dogs after all......

That is an horrific video and awful to see. However, while it is clear that many nations don't have the same animal welfare standards as the animal-loving (for the most part) UK, I agree with other posters that it would be unfair to tar all Italians with the same brush.

There was a story in HHO a few weeks ago about some point-to-pointers who were killed when they escaped onto a road (or something similar) - who is to say that some Italians wouldn't be abhorred by that? Or by horses killed in NH races / eventing / TBs being factory produced for racing? Not to mention Carrot & Spud.

Disclaimer : I love racing and eventing (and TBs), just picking a few random examples...

If you are refering to the op then I take umbrage at your reply. I live in Italy, I was a groom for many years-eventers, sjs and various neds. I know what Im talking about and Im including the general approach to horsemanship and all it entails. No, not everyone should be tarred with the same brush but the life of an equine here is rather sad and rather short compared to that of a British horse. I cannot comment on the lifestyle of an Australian horse, so I wont. Mairi.

Gekko, in one sense you are right, not ALL Italians are the same (my father certainly isnt!), but cruelty is just not something the wider population bother themselves with.
I can almost guarentee you that down the boozer that night the horses owners whilst gutted they have lost a horse, will be bragging how "brave" he was.
Brave my a*se, he died in a pool of his own blood in terrible pain and nobody even had the good sense to shot the poor sod and end his misery.
The same way that the little lads at school will brag about their stray dogs who ripped each other to bits. Will the teachers care? Will they hell as like, they did the same thing as kids themselves and see no harm in it.

Here endeth my rant

I am Italian... and I would have felt very offended by this post, if it hadn't been opened by Mairi.

Unfortunately, no country in the world is, in its totality, kind to its animals. If there was one which was totally void of cruelty against animals, we would all move there probably and make it so overcrowded so soon that it'd become un-liveable!

To a certain extent I do agree that a horse's life in the UK is better than a horse's life in Italy (turnout springs to mind!), but we all agree, I think, that British equines are pretty lucky compared not only to Italy but to the rest of Europe too (again, the turnout example - finding a yard in Germany with turnout is like finding gold).

Britain has the worst crime rate in Europe, but I would never dream of saying that all Brits are criminals (well, I married one, so I hope not!
grin.gif
), nor would I stop going to the UK for this.

There are countries that I've vowed never to visit, but they have serious human rights issues (China, and the Muslim countries for their treatment of women), normally sanctioned at government level. Isolated cases of violence against animals, like the one in the link, (because that's what it is - I grew up in Italy and I have met as many people totally devoted to animals as I have elsewhere) are, exactly, isolated. All generalisations are very very bad and very very dangerous.

Not sure what I just saw. Did thehorse get injured when he ran into a gate at the end of a race. The owner looked pretty concerned. Maybe he got a vet.
After all the video ended so whos to say what happen?

I remember attending the West Kent and Surrey and Burstow hunt as a spectator when the whipper-in s horse returned with about 3 kilos of prime horse steak hanging off its lacerated shoulder, where it had run into barbed wire at speed. There was blood everywhere the leg (on a grey), was totally red and I held the lump of "meat" against the horse with a towel whilst the owner called the vet to stitch him.
Horse made a full and total recovery and was back out hunting (with scars to prove) within 2 months.

You cannot assume what happen next in the video, maybe the horse was lovingly attended to by vet and owner - are people jumping to conclusions that are not justified here?

Let us not forget that a lot of very rich people in THIS country make vast sums of money from the horse racing industry.

Also many racehorses break limbs and are shot on the track. Many of these are very young and very beautiful too.
Yet they are treated as cannon fodder here

Lets put this in perspective, PLEASE !
We are not talking about trucking horses hundreds of miles across Mexico to an inhumane slaughter, or even the plight of the European horses trucked to the slaughter houses of Italy, and honestly that`s the main reason I would never choose to holiday there.

Plus someone might serve me up some SALAMI in my starter too.

Since I am at least the 3rd person to comment on this quote, I would be interested to hear your justification as to why those that eat horse, dog and cat are any worse than those who eat sheep, chicken, lamb, pig, cow, fish...?

It's why I never leave Blighty. Bad enough the goings on here, without taking my money to countries where the animal rights are non-existant
frown.gif
If we all boycotted the places with shite AR, and tell them why, they'd soon clean their acts up. That's asking the impossible, though, so I'll just stay here and try not to think about it.
