I have some foreign guests staying who would love to see an English hunt.

The local hunt is still cubbing - I have rang the local secretary who has said we are welcome to come along (in car/on foot). So v early morning for us I think - eek.

Please can someone give me a quick course on cubbing ...

I know this pack is foxhounds but ....

1. What is the purpose of cubbing
2. Do the hunt staff & followers wear different jackets before the opening meet???
3. Is it worth following or is there too much standing around
4. Have most hunts had their opening meet yet - when is normal?
5. Should I pay a 'followers cap' what is the form here?

and any other bits of information specific to cubbing so I can explain it to them .

Thanks!!

Hi :)
(1) getting the young hounds out so they can learn their job
(2) Everyone tends to wear a tweed jacking jacket.
(3) always worth following as you can get so much closer to the action
(4) Opening meets have started in the last week- it varies from hunt to hunt- ours isnt for 3 weeks..
(5) followers tend not to pay a cap- at our hunt they have whisky raffles at the meet to raise extra funds. Footies are also encouraged to join the supporters club

Most importantly- wrap up warm and have fun :)
Post ban, it still looks very much the same except when you hear the hounds speaking its because they have found the artificial trail ;)

Thanks Darkly_Dreaming_Dex

Went this morning and had fabulous time.

Would thoroughly recommend to anyone else in similar sitaution to ring the secretary beforehand as she very kindly arranged for one of the followers to look after us and explain what was happening and also to meet the master - who invited us back to the kennels to see the hounds, etc. A real 5* welcome and experience.

Southern hemisphere Foreign Friend now additicted to English Country Sports and wants to learn to ride properly so when he comes back in 2 years time he can join in!! (He said he has finally seen the point of horse-riding!).
