I waited until my foal (Faith) had been microchipped (on 21 August) before sending off all the paperwork to Anglo European Studbook to register/passport her. "All the paperwork" consisted of:

Covering certificate
Identification picture thingy done by the vet (£42)
Spare microchip bar codes and microchip form
Copies of mare's registration and passport so Faith can be pink papered
Building Society cheque (£47)

All the above was posted on 22nd August. I waited and waited and waited for Faith's passport. At the end of September I rang the AES, the paperwork has never arrived. To be fair to them they ransacked the office but have no trace of anything ever arriving. "Don't worry" they said "you can get another covering certificate". Yes, I can, BUT it will cost me again to get the vet to do the ID thingy (no, the vet did not keep a copy) and I'll have to pay the registration fee again as there is (apparently) no way of checking if the cheque has ever been banked. According to the Nationwide BS a BS cheque is just like sending a postal order or, effectively, cash. Great!

Not only that, I am still chasing the microchip people for Faith's registration certificate. I e-mailed them on 24th September asking where the certificate was as it was a good month since I had sent the paperwork to them. I received an e-mail on 25th September saying that she had been registered on 20th September (how come it took 3 weeks?) and that the certificate would follow immediately. No certificate arrived so I e-mailed again on 5th October. No reply to that e-mail so I rang them last Thursday (11th) as still no certificate. I was assured that they would put the certificate in the post that day. Well, I know there's been a postal strike but it's back to normal here now (I received today something I should have got last Wednesday) but still no certificate. I did get excited today as there was post from the microchip people but it is only an invitation to send them £14.95 to renew the mare's registration for 8 years!! As all the original microchip paperwork is with all the other stuff out there in the ether somewhere, I will need the certificate so I can send a copy for her passport.

Not only that, I received a *cough* *ahem* letter from the vet today re the bill for 21st August for the mare's vacc and Faith's microchip....... I paid it at the Equine Hospital in person, in cash on 28th September!

*goes into corner and bangs head against the wall*

When I finally assemble all the relevant paperwork again for the AES, I'm going to deliver it in person! It's going to cost me a fortune to register her!

Oh I do sympathise, it happened to me some years back so I can feel your pain and frustration; it's a horrid feeling plus it hurts the pocket something rotten; it was bad enough when I did it but that was years ago and everything has doubled in price since then!

I know it's not much use to you now, but having learnt the hard way, I now photocopy absolutely everything including the cheque before I send anything to do with passports away and I also send them recorded delivery. I know it's a faff but at least you've got back ups if the worst happens.

Typical vet account department though, they'll always try to get blood out of you if they can! I'd give them a very quiet earful - if you haven't already.

Meanwhile, would a glass of wine help?........ No, I thought not........................................

Yes, I agree about the photocopying everything - hindsight is a wonderful thing! The annoying thing is that I'm going to have to as the vet who chipped Faith to also do the ID chart as, of course, I have now weaned her and, as everyone knows, Izzy is 85 miles away in darkest Oxfordshire!

. . . erm . . . nice glass of tawny port, actually, courtesy of one of the guys at work who was in Lisbon last week and appreciated my efforts at changing his flight home 3 times!
