hi everyone,

so i have decided to get a rider to help out with my horse (not paid, not a sharer) just a rider. as i work very long hours and sometimes can only ride 1-2 times a week.

the one that they will be riding is pretty young, but she is capable and understands what i expect from her riding and what she can and cant do with my youngster (5) he needs alot of schooling and is still learning his aids ect and can add in a buck now and again when he tries it on. she has met the youngster and me, and i think she is well matched with the horse and we get on very well. i know she would be ok and not let him take the p*** with her.

she has agreed to start riding him for me from a set date next week. anyway....

i would like to right up a little contract, explaining things like her agreeing to lock tack away ect when finished riding, and also that she will be riding him at her own risk as he is young and can be unpredictable. what else should i put in it? and is it cheeky of me to ask her to sign a contract just for riding my horse?

Have you got something in place in case the horse gets hurt when ridden by this rider? Does your insurance cover this and wouyld you expect her to pay vet fees if he got injured while under her care?
You could also add where she can or cant take him for rides-ie particular busy road.

yes insurance covers her , i have said if he is injured i would ask her for half of the excess. and yes i have said he can not go on the roads hacking yet as he is too inexperienced (she is fine with that and we have agreed to discuss and do road work together when the time is right) i have also asked her not to jump him yet as he does need alot of schooling ect, but as before have agreed to discuss when he gets to that stage xx
 
I think an agreement is a must in this day & age. I'd also put in something about having the right to terminate the arrangment should you have any concerns that your rider is not keeping to what you have agreed and that horse, tack etc remain your property (or something along thos lines). When I drew up a loan agreement I tried to think of everything that could go wrong!
 
Thank you. should i include how many times a week MAX i would like her to ride him? obviously i dont want him worked every single day but he does need about 3-4 times a week for now. and just wondering if anyone could give me an example of how i can word it all in contract i am no good with stuff like this xx
 
I know you say this isn't a share (more like unpaid schooling work!) but in many respects it is similar.

The BHS sample loan agreement might be good to modify.

And pop in writing /everything/ you do/don't want rider to do, including abiding by any yard rules such as picking up in arena. With an extra clause such as 'Any other activities (you're bound to have forgotten something a rider might do!) must be agreed with owner first'

Also: you might want to be really specific about the injuries and excess or else just agree you'll pay... i.e. if horse has /any/ injury between the times you saw it when rider was riding? Otherwise how are you to know what to do if horse e.g. got a kick? Did it happen in field or when rider rode it up the back of another horse in the arena? Maybe a silly example but you see what I mean.

Having said that I've never had a really watertight contract and never, so far, got in trouble!
