My horse is going to have a pastern artherodesis on Monday, and so she has to go fully under anastetic, i'm really worried about this (more the anastetic) please can someone reassure me?
Okay I can't give you statistics etc as I'm sure someone else better qualified can.
However, having just put a very ill horse through a GA a fortnight ago and didn't really have time to think about the whole ins and outs can I just say it will naturally be a big worry for you and no doubt "think the worst". She will be in great hands though and will recover absolutely fine from the whole experience.
For the record the very ill pony came through his op great and today after turning into a mad bucking bronco when out for his lunchtime walk was being threatened with all sorts of things
My Boy has been through it twice this year in the space of a fortnight for procedure (he's only 5) and is as right as rain. It did concern me too, but I spoke the vets and they gave me the facts and reassured me Once he was awake he was his normal cheeky self too
Good luck I hope it all goes smoothly for your horse
My mare had to go under anastetic twice in a 3 week period and she was fine. I had 3 equine touch sessions for her in the following weeks as I think they benefit from the balancing.
My only definate is to NEVER agree to trial any new anastetic drug (friends horse died trialling).
She will be fine! I have had two horses anaesthatised more than once and I can truly say they come out of it a lot more quickly than humans! It takes me 3 days to recover from it and our pony who had 4 hour colic op was on her feet and receiving visitors about 6 hours later (albeit a bit subdued).
