A facebook friend lost her beloved horse Sam today after a fallen tree broke his fencing and he was hit by a car. :(

She would like this shared as if it makes just one person check their fences again, or drive more carefully, it is worth it.

"I can't keep this post on my timeline as I can't bear to look at it. I took these photos while still in shock. Please PLEASE drive carefully on country roads. Fences are down all over the place due to the storms... which is what happened to us as a tree fell through the fence. My little man suffered so much and the driver left the scene. Please share as a reminder as this is something people don't think could happen to them. Oh and please check your fencing every two minutes during these storms! From one devastated owner. RIP, Sam."

These two photos posted with the message above are graphic so I will link them, but they illustrate the tragedy.

It has over 250 shares on facebook this evening, some of you may have seen it amongst HHO facebook friends. Hopefully it is making people think.

i havent seen the photos. (cant get onto social websites on work computer) but i feel so sorry for the owner and all who were involved with this horse. cant imagine what its like going through something like this and what as*****s to just drive away! it must have been distressing for the driver but surely anyone with any decency wouldn't just drive away? again im so sorry for the loss of your horse. and i agree how important it is to check fences reguarly in this weather

I saw this on Fb too (owner is a friend of a couple of my Fb friends). Although I don't know the owner of this poor beautiful boy, my heart went out to her and I felt shock and desperate sadness at the thought of her loss.

It's a terrible reminder of how easily and quickly such accidents happen. My thoughts are with your friend, I can only imagine how she must be feeling. RIP lovely Sam and condolences to everyone who loved him. :(

Guys please read this addition to the above post!

(I've edited this post as people have assumed the driver was speeding and didn't stop - that is not true - he was on his way to a funeral and he gave me his details. It was a tragic accident and lucky nobody else was killed. I shared this to make people aware that it's a real possibility at the moment in this weather. Thanks)

Thanks to anyone who shared the post, and for your thoughts and messages. Sam was very special to me and everyone who knew him - real personality of a pony and I still can't quite believe what has happened.

The post cannot be shared from my Facebook any longer - I had to delete it from my timeline as I couldn't bear to see the photos once the shock had worn off. However, I'm glad to hear it's been shared far and wide, and I hope it prevents at least one more accident. I wouldn't wish what I witnessed on anyone.
