Please could somebody help

I am at my wits end and don't know what else to do. Due to my new job I desperately need to find a companion home for my 16.3hh boy or somebody how just wants to have a horse to fuss over. Due to the fact he bolts he can NEVER be ridden, he is an absolute gentle giant in every other way.

I Have tried to advertise him in the local paper and tack shops, I've also tried online sites. I just wondered if any of you nice people know of anybody looking for such a horse.

Due to his bolting i will never give him away as i know there could be a very good chance he could end up in the wrong hands, but I'm more than happy for a long term loan (if that's what you want to call it). As i said he is a lovely horse from the ground which makes my decision even harder plus i have had him for 14yrs. If i can't find a good home for him i will have to have him PTS. Please before you jump on me for saying PTS i would not be doing this lightly but i would never want him to full into the wrong hands and him hurting someone, or god forbid killing someone.

If anybody could help please please let me know.
 
How old is he?

ETA, I was going to suggest the blood bank but if you've had him 14 years he'd be too old.

He's 18yrs but not been ridden since about 7yrs so no mileage on the clock. Touches wood now, he has not had a day ill and the only time he Sees a vet is for his teeth when they need checking. I know some people will say he's too old but his health is 100%

By the way whats the blood bank ?
 
Probably not a very good answer, but what about having a think around and seeing whether a 'type' of yard would like a good nanny horse for turnout etc...Maybe try come comp yards, racing or..??..Not sure really

What's the situation could you not put him on grass livery somwehere, which would be cheap! Or having a drive round local and finding a field to rent with others!

They have herds of unridable, field-sound horses which are used for donating blood for transfusions. They pts at 15 years old when the blood quality decreases though and places are limited.
 
What an awful position to be in.

You are obviously doing all you can to find him a new home and it is worth considering grass livery for him.

I am not going to jump on you for considering pts if you cant find a suitable home for him, I think as a last resort it would be the kindest thing for him, but lets hope it doesnt come to that and you can find a grass livery for him.
 
I have my own place so money's not the problem, it's just because of my new job I'm not around much and I'm finding it very hard to find the time for him and I don't think it's fair on the horse.

As long as he is well fed, has good grazing and a mate - what exactly is he missing about you? After all, he's used to being a companion with you, surely since he was 7. What you are looking for is no different surely??

I had thought about that and had someone who wanted to do that. They came about 2-3 times and then never turned up again.
 
I assume due to him being only good for a companion, your problem lies with his size! Most people want a small pony for companions so they are cost effective with hay and feed, and also easy to handle! I'm guessing his size will put people off! What an awful situation to be in!!

I would perhaps do him a 'CV as a companion' and send it round all the non professional and professional yards, any horsey people you know, ask your farrier to put it up in his van (mine has a notice board in his!), feed shops, tack shops, vets, what about colleges, horse sanctuaries, etc...

True, he may only be a companion with me but i spent time with him and had time for him which is something i don't have anymore. I don't want him to be just a horse out in the field with no contact with anyone.
 
But how will he have no contact with anyone? You have to check the horses he's with (or someone does) daily - twice daily........

Unfortunately for us, our horses equine companions are far more important that us.

Yes his size is a big problem, but he really is a great big sweet heart which is why he deserves to find someone else who will spend time with him and why i want to try and do everything i can to try and find him a new home before i have to do the last resort.
 
Why don't you look at this from another angle - if you have your own land, how about seeing if you can find someone who would like to be a grass or non-ridden livery with you?

You could charge a nominal amount and share the work, or charge less and ask them to do more of the work if you are busy.

That way your horse has a companion, you have help, and everyone's happy!

If you can't do this, and no other home materialises, then your last option would be pts, and that is your choice and sometimes the correct and only choice in a situation like this.
 
He use to be brought in to be brushed and have some TLC, all he gets now is just a quick hello and that's not what it's about. I just want to find someone who will care for as i have done so for so many years.

Yes some people are happy to pay someone else to look after their horse and then turn up when they like, I have never been like that and will not start now. I'm not just going to turn him out in a field and go to see him for 5mins as that's all the time i have.

I have no winter turnout so makes my live even harder. As it is now I'm having to get up early to do him, rush back in to get my kids pack lunches done and everything else done ready for school, go to work, come home put dinner on, rush out to do horse, sort kids out and bath time, finally i get to sit down after 8pm and it's getting too much.

I don't want to seem ungrateful for your replies as i appreciate them all but please could we just go back to what i first asked and if anybody knows of a good home for him please let me know.
 
Why not try one of the charities? If money is not a problem then a nice donation may encourage them to take him. Alternatively, you see these retirement places advertised where they can live out the rest of their days with you paying effectively for a grass livery (although ensure its genuine). You could still be able to see him that way and know that he is being well looked after. PTS just seems a tad unfair when he has served you so well as your friend. Good luck.
