Please do not feed...............

I don't think the mother would get my vote for good parenting skills

And I think we've all got experience that horses don't need to be on public ground to be pestered by people (yes, I know this one was!)

Shame for the poor wee lad, but as someone who has witnessed people throwing all manner of gubbins over the fence to "feed" my perfectly well fed horse, and had to put up a sign to ask them not to, I wonder what part of "it's not your horse so don't feed it" some folk don't understand. Especially considering that if they are tethered gypsy ponies, they may not be especially used to contact from strangers.
I suppose we should be thankful that the same rules that apply to dogs don't apply to horses.

i feel sorry for the boy but they should of been more careful. its like going up to a random person on the street. the pony could of been hurt and the boy had touched a sensitive area. im sorry but animals cant defend themselves and a lot of the time whatever happens isnt their fault.

Poor kid, but no real sympathy here, even if I am one to feed the gypsy ponies, and rearrange the tethered stallions rugs when they've all slipped around..... :)

Again I feel for the little boy and hope that A - he's ok and B - meets some nice ponies to get him back 'into' animals. I like his mother accepting responsibility for it though so well done her.

Stupid woman, feel sorry for the child though & hopefully the mother has learnt a bit of sense.
What I don't get tho is the same parents probably wouldn't allow their child to approach an unattended dog, but half a ton of horse with teeth & hooves is ok!
Not sure where the mentality of feeding other peoples horses comes from, I don't go leaning over peoples fences to throw food at their dogs.

Oh, I just read that the ponies were being tormented by older kids... No wonder. Terribly sad, the whole thing.

No sympathy here I'm afraid.

The public need to realise that horses can be dangerous. I bet the kid wouldn't be allowed to go and pet a strange dog yet for some reason it's seen as acceptable to go and fuss a strange pony.

Oh dear! I notice the wounds form a smiley face. Some parents would pay money for that!

On a side note, I notice that Prince Harry is the utmost hero and something about Diana's children being barefoot. I wonder if they were trimmed by a farrier or trimmer? Gotta love the Daily Fail. :D

I NEED a LIKE button :D

I feel sorry for the little boy.
Regardless as to whether other "brats" had been hitting the pony, I'm sure every one of us on here knows that ANY horse can start nipping when fed too many titbits. Most don't, but I've been on the recieving end of greedy nips when other owners ON A LIVERY YARD, used to feed titbits to my "cute little pony" when I wasn't around. I never ever fed her by hand, but when she started mugging me, trying to get her nose in my pockets/hands in her mouth, I asked if anyone had been feeding her. The answer was yes !
She came to me, wild and never handled, from the New Forest. It took months of careful handling to fully gain her trust. Yet A S S H O L E S
on the same LIVERY YARD thought it was "cute" to give her carrots/polos/treats EVERY time they were at the yard to do their OWN horses

Sad really, a mother wants her child to see and care about animals . You cant blame her really, and as has been said ,she didnt blame the animal or owners. To be honest however, the biggest danger from a tethered pony is getting caught up in the tether.

Sorry for the kid, especially cos his mother is stupid.

I hope loads of people who know nothing about horses read this and stop feeding animals that don't belong to them.

That area of Sunderland is notorious- there had just been a FB campaign to remove a dead cob still attached to it's tether after three days down about one of the cobs there as no owner would admit it was theirs and take responsibility for removing it... After it died of strangles. So no chance of suing any owner- and tbh those horses are not particularly close to the road either, there is a bit of a walk to get to one of the tethered horses there. They made the choice, sadly the child got hurt, hopefully they will stop bothering them!

Sorry, not a lot of sympathy.

Nothing to say about thevpony or the mother that hasnt already been said, but in the second pic, the little boy looks proper proud of his "war wound!" still looks sore tho, brave little tyke!M

Cos his mother is stupid ? Why ?

Because she allowed a child of three to approach an animal much larger than him, of unknown temperament and then was horrified at the animal reacting poorly to the boy.

She's certainly a lot more articulate than you

Don't be silly, cariad, there's a dear. You know neither her nor I. Articulate? Do you really think the way she commented was accurately reported? Do you know many people from Sunderland and the way they phrase sentences? Oddly, I do, being from near there.

Oh dear, I really must stop worrying about thoughtless comments on here. Perhaps I should also stop doing my day job: obviously, I'm doing it wrongly. :p

Suffice to say, I would not allow a child to approach an animal I didn't know.

Not Stupid, naive maybe. She had the common sense to realise it was an accident and not the ponies fault.

Just because WE know that feeding tibbits makes them greedy and pushing, the vast majority of people think they just enjoy it,they're being kind and it makes them like them them (it does!). It's almost a tradition to go and feed the horses carrots and sugarlumps and unsuprising that most people think it's ok.

Darned horse owners who tether on public land, because they won't pay for livery! Of course they will get fed titbits. Poor ponies getting teased by kids and unable to get away - it's a recipe for disaster and the owners don't care. Would any of you posters really even consider tethering your horse on public land?

Poor lad, yes naive mother, but then I don't expect dogs tethered outside shops to have a go either.
