Has anyone ever had sports hypnotherapy to try to get them over a mental collywobble (i.e. if you have a particular fear or hang up about riding)?

I am desperate to do something with my girl again. Ok, not in the immediate future seeing as the little moo has only just come off box rest, but in the New Year, there's nothing more I'd like than to have the odd 'outing'

But there is very little we can actually do without my nerves getting in the way - cross country is never going to be my forte as I have always been a chicken when it comes to ditches, water and drops

Dressage is out of the question as we just dont bend, and showing...well, showing would be entertaining (for the spectators), but neither of us are really up to it (especially now Elz is practically a star gazer and has two splints on her front legs

)
And that only leaves show jumping, our old friend

I would love love love to get back to jumping - I miss the buzz and the bling and everything I used to adore about going off to a show. But I have this mental block since our accident that just puts me into a panic - the thought of having a jumping lesson terrifies me, and the thought of jumping any kind of combination (and dont MENTION grid work

) is just horrible!
Over the past couple of years, Ellie and I have contented ourselves plodding round fun rides and popping some XC fences along the way, which is a huge achievement considering I said I'd never jump again, and I have also got myself to the point where I am reasonably happy to put up a little jump in the school and pop over it a couple of times. But that is as far as it goes!

Someone recently mentioned that I should go and get hypnotised to get rid of my fear of grids and doubles. I think what I have is some form of jumping claustrophobia, which makes sense as our accident occurred during grid work, and any attempts I made in the few outings we had afterwards before I gave up altogether tended to end in me pulling Ellie out before the second element of a combi - a definite rider collywobble! Has anyone here ever had hypnotism for a similar kind of issue, and does it work??
I have no illusions of grandeur; Elz and I are never going to be jumping Newcomers again, but I would like to be able to confidently enter the odd class at a local show, without cacking my pants beforehand, falling off at the first fence in terror or being fearful of every combination

Any experiences/ideas?

I've no experience of hypnosis for over coming fear. However, it DID successfully get my mum in law to stop smoking and stay off fags. She had smoked some 35 or more years when advised to stop by her doc because of serious health issues. Never expected her to do it, but the hynotherapist gave a money back guarantee if it didn't work. Think she had 3 sessions, but it cured her totally of the dreaded "weed".
If you can find one as good as hers was, go for it!

A friend had hypnotherapy and found it very useful. She had lost her nerve due to her baby ned bolting badly with her and she would literally shake before riding.
She's now back to jumping and competing, baby ned sadly loss of use due to nerve damage.
So I'd say give it a go!!

Not horse related, but my Dad was an 80 a day smoker and he had one session of hypnotherapy and not only did he never want one again, but it didn't bother him if anyone else smoked in front of him either.

Don't dismiss showing though - it's not the end of the world for a horse in a ridden showing class to have splints - in fact, my last welsh cob still won in-hand classes with splints, as does my current one. What about working hunter classes? You still have the jumping and ok, you have to do an individual show, but if you're only talking about local level, there are an awful lot of wooden horses out there (including mine) doing dressage and showing so it's worth thinking about.

Spottyappy and Squirtly'sMum - thanks for the replies! Have you any idea who your guys used, or how they went about finding a hypnotist?! As I wouldnt even know where to start!!!

Chunkie - showing really wouldnt be an option; Ellie isnt really working hunter type (she'd be more show hunter, but I'd say she's too light even for that!) I've taken her in riding horse classes before and it was disastrous - again, she's not really heavy enough and she still goes far too much like a show jumper, head in the air etc

So there really isnt much I can do with her, showing wise!

Not for anything riding related, but I did try it to stop smoking.

Unfortunately, unlike the other posters, it didn't work for me. I just wouldn't be hypnotised. I ended up pretending cos I felt sorry for the hypnotherapist, but even that back fired since, at the end of the session, he said happily "Well you won't be needing these anymore" and took my ciggies.

didn't have the heart to say, 'Well maybe I will take them just in case!'

I had been in there 2 blooming hours and had to make a 5 mile round trip on the way home to get more

So I would say its worth a try, but doesn't work for
everyone

NB My current bout of viral bronchitis is working well as at stopping the old smoking though, and a lot cheaper

Yes and it worked brilliantly - Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) and there are certified practitioners.

My young daughter had real hang ups with certain fences and the process was so gentle - just lots of really re-assuring and confidence giving words and then a wonderful little trick that we still use today.....

Imagine your "bogey" fence and in the background, imagine your favourite type of fence. Then say the word "swish" and as you say it, swap the postition of the fences in your mind so that your favourite fence comes to the front but completely blocks out the mental picture of your bogey fence.

It sounds simple but it really does work.

You can google NLP and find registered practitioners.

Good luck - and have great fun in the future!

My mum in law found hers through the yellow pages. I think there is some kind of professional body that over sees them so you could try and online search for your area. Good luck.

Thank you so much for the replies! I was feeling so skeptical about asking as I thought everyone would think it a bit silly...but maybe not, lol!

PF - sorry to hear you're feeling a bit wobbly. I saw your video, it did look as nasty fall - and as freakish as the one I had with Ellie tbh, the type of tumble that could happen to anyone at any time
crazy.gif
It's a horrid feeling though, isnt it? I went back to jumping for about 6 months after I had my fall, and I tried and tried to feel positive but it just never worked, I ended up getting so het up about it

Thank you to everyone - I will google NLP as well

I have to say, I listened to the clip of the confident rider CD on Youtube and I laughed
blush.gif
It sounds so weird....how do take it seriously!?!

I am the same as Oldmare I'm afraid. Sat there feeling like an idiot, knowing damn well I wasn't hypnotised, with the hypnotist arguing I was.

They took your money up front and I didn't get a refund either

I didn't go in there, negatively, expecting it not to work. I hoped it was the answer to my problems.

It was a very reputable place too

It is strange at 1st when you listen to it!! but in the right setting ie laid on the settee or bed in a darkened room its very relaxing and after awhile i drift off and often wonder if ive heard it all the way through!! The buzzer thing at the end brings me round lol

and when i was having my lesson on my cob it would come back to me and it def helped
grin.gif
for what they cost in comparison to seeing someone its great value and its def worth a go!

You can have a course at this place - http://www.ashenec.co.uk/58123.html - it includes hypnotherapy and simulator lessons, some NLP as well. A friends suggested it to me after I fell off and broke my pelvis and I developed real panic attacks once I tried to start riding again. My friend broke her back in a jumping accident, and is now riding again with the help of courses from this place. I haven't been able to afford to go yet, but it is definitely something I want to do. In the meantime, I have been having lessons on a school master which has helped my confidence tremendously.

I had hypnotherapy years ago - to help me give up smoking 20 a day. It was brilliant. It worked really well - I still wanted to smoke and I still had cravings but it made me believe that I could overcome them. It sounds silly but it gave me the confidence to continue. I went to a psychologist who was fully qualified as a therapist and had 3 sessions. It was amazing and I can still remember the techniques she taught me. I think I would go if I was you but make sure you go to someone really good. It wont completely cure you but it will give you self belief which is all you need
grin.gif

A friend went to a sports pychologist after a really bad fall jumping and is now jumping again.
