Someone 'does' my horse on night a week. She mucks out, feeds and sometimes rides. No money changes hands.

However, a few others on my yard have people who 'do' their horses a few times a week and the 'loaner or sharer' make a contribution.

Should I be charging this woman to look after my horse one day a week?
Or should I be paying her to look after him one day a week as that way I'm not paying full livery for that day.

Could someone please explain the difference between loaning, sharing and riding as payment for doing yard duties.

Thanks

I had someone who used to help me out with my grey boy, she would bring him in every night in the winter and finish off any jobs I had not had time to do in the morning and in return rode him 3 times a week. She also did mornings for me in holidays (her choice I hsaten to add - she worked in a school and loved spending more time at the yard in the hols) and then would ride him more often. I didn't ask for any money as frankly she was saving me a fortune in not having to pay for him to be brought in every night and finishing of bits and pieces so that I didn't have to rush home from work. He is now on full loan to someone else but still on the yard and the lady who has him on loan is paying all the bills including shoeing, livery, feed, bedding and insurance. The old sharer is still helping her out but only 2 days a week now as she also has another horse that she does on a different yard 3 days a week.
