I'm am goggle-eyed from spending hours looking for a suitable horsebox on the internet.

Looking for something that will take 2 large horses (so needs a decent payload), but overall length of box to be no greater than 21ft due to shortage of storage space. Would like some living area. Forward/rear facing, or herringbone and chassis no more than 10 years old. Have been to look at several boxes, but either too large, or not what they look like in the ads.... Any suggestions welcome!

It's good to hear someone who is concerned about payload, good for you. I know exactly what you mean about lorrys that are nothing like the advert. I did many miles trying to find mine.

To ensure you have sufficient payload you could do with a purpose built horsebox rather than a conversion. Conversions are invariably heavier. If you keep your living requirements fairly simple then you should end up with sufficient payload. The old style stick sided lorries, Tristar or similar would give you sufficient payload. I have an X reg (2000) Daf with a Tristar body. It has tilt cab, a luton, sleeps 3/4, sink, hob, grille, 240 hook up, tidy living & is stalled for 3. It has an ulw of 5.6 tons so 1.9 tons of payload which is plenty.

I checked out adverts in newspapers, tack shops, internet sites etc & eventually bought mine from South Wales. I asked loads of questions before I went to view lorries but many owners were less than truthful & I had a lot of wasted journeys. You just have to stick with it & eventually you'll find one. Good Luck with your search, you'll eventually find the one you want.

If you have a decent budget

your best bet would be to get one built for you. I had one built by Priory Stud (Essex) a few years ago for two large horses facing forwards, with a bit of living. It was 7.5 tonne and had plenty of payload. How large are the large horses. I sold my 7.5 tonne and have just bought one of these two horse boxes . Its payload is 1.2 tonnes and it is absolutely fantastic and the guy there was great to deal with. |(There in Norfolk btw)

My horses have a combined weight of around 1150kg, so with husband and me on board and all gear, need a greater payload. Were you pleased with Priory Stud? Have been talking to them about a box, but they are quite expensive!

Im toying with the idea of downsizing to a 3.5t but Im scared my horse or should I say brat wont go in one!!
I had mine made last year but really dont warrant a 7.5t horsebox for one horse but he seems to only travel herringbone, definately not in a trailer frowards anyway

I've got a T-reg (1999) DAF two horse side loading forward facing for sale with full living. Unladen weight is around 5.4 ton. PM me or email tiger.feet@btinternet.com if you want more information. Not sure of the length but it's quite compact. It's just away for it's plating so will be sold with a year's test.
