Hi guyyyyyssss.....

BASICALLY my darling puppy has had a red ear for a few days, so we took her to the vet today. Forgot to book an apporintment with our normal vet, so we got this retard woman (sorry, but she was).

Anyway, she suddenly launches into this rant about how what we thought was a normal ear infection would most probably be a skin allergy or some other awful skin problem, and starts whipping out all these medicines that we have to use. Didnt really explain what she thought was wrong, just that it could be multiple things.

Now, two questions for you!

1. What do you think it could be? And is it a major problem if it is an allergy/skin condition?

2. Instead of these nasty chemicals she's given us, does anyone recommend any more natural essences etc? I really don't wanna load up my 5 month old with chemicals if at all possible. Anything for glossy coat and moisturised skin would be great.

I'm sorry but I don't think any of us are in a position to give advice on so little information, and when a vet has already offered an opinion. You are fully entitled to ask to see your usual vet, I would do it straight away to put your mind at rest.

Reading your post again, are you saying your pup has a dull coat and dry skin, because if this is the case it could be as the vet says an allergy or skin proble, but either way just ask to see a different vet.

Hi guys,

Sorry for sounding stressed, I know that the vet gave her opinion but I just don't trust it. I also am really anti pumping an animal full of chemicals. I'd like some supplements that aren't chemical.

Her coat is beautiful to be honest, I dont see any problems at all.

I'll look up ear mites, thanks! xxx

P.S. her skin is very marginally dandruffy - but she is black, so you see every speckle. Its very, VERY small. very small amounts. xxxxx

My dog has had ear infections in the past and has been prescribed Audiclean, Canaural, Surolan and latterly, Epi-Optic which is used once a week and is probably working the best. If you have been given any of these, they would not be an unusual or harsh treatment.

I have also used Thornit powder, which is a non licensed ear mite treatment, and aloe vera gel on the outer ear to ease itching and reduce heat.

My dog has a skin condition called an Atopia made worse by pollen allergies.
I wouldn't try to self-medicate her as she is still very young, you may have to explore a lot of avenues with your vet to get to the root of it, it could be anything from an allergy to an ear infection to mites to simply a grass seed stuck in there.

Hiya,

We've been prescribed canaural - we're definitely going to do that for her, wasnt going to self prescribe for that. Just wanted to konw if i could help her coat along (if she does have dry skin like she says) without the medicines.

Think you're right HH. Thank goodness we're insured!

Lucky you...there's no way I can get mine insured now!!! (Not just ears, though...)

Aloe vera juice and brewers yeast are said to be good for coat condition - a guy at our club has a dobe on the latter and you could see your face in his coat.
He also gives fish oil...

Ooh thats interesting, my bf said cod liver oil and i ignored him!! =S

Will look in to them. Thanks love.

Any other supplement ideas still wanted! willl check out them all and post cupcakes your way

Canaural is quite commonly used for ear problems, I wouldn't worry about it harming her. You mentioned not wanting to pump her full of chemicals, what else did the vet say to give her.

I swear by aloe vera juice. Is very soothing and calming for all sorts of skin irritations, gastric problems etc etc Buy it in your health food shop and just add a capful to food. Also try a gluten free food - wheat is commonly used as a bulking agent in a lot of dog foods which can cause a skin/gut reaction. Aloe is also good for sorting out wind..............
