A little different to your horse, but my lami mare got septic PEDAL OSTEITIS (pedal bone infection.)

I read up and investigated my BHS notes and internet. Everywhere said no hope to cure and the only way to stop it is surgery to remove the bad pieces.
This we can't do with a lami mare as they have to tourniquet the blood off while they do the surgery and then the sudden blood flow will or could cause a lami flare up.

It got worst in next x ray so :
she went on a course of:

Potassium Iodide strengthens the hoof
Baytril penetrates the bones to eradicate the infection
Norodine broad spectrum antibiotics

The next Xray showed no more deterioration of the bone and the 3 above halted the infection and it went.

Ask your vet about these 3 without these she WOULD not be here today.:D

not had it in the neck but my youngster had 3 ops on her tendon sheath to remove infection and after the 3rd one the infection somehow moved to the pastern joint so had a 4th on it, the vet thought the infection was coming back so rather than put her through a 5th op which neither the vets nor I would have done they injected baytril direct into the site of the infection in the pastern, they put a tourniquite (sp???) on to keep the baytril in the pastern not sure how many times they did this but she got home and is now sound on it:)

Clean trax is used in hospitals to vlewn bones that have broken and cone through skin and got grit etc in. It's about £15 a bottle. But would need access to the infected bone to clean it.

Thank you everyone going to speak to my vet. thank you :):) Very interested in this Baytril.

It is expensive trust me, the best things are I am just about to give my mare her lunch time doe- she sees me coming and disappears to back of box lol. She knows she has no choice but likes to express her opinion.:D

We have a livery recovering from osteomylitis (sp?). The infection set up home in the vertebrae in his neck causing serious neurological symptoms. He had 6 weeks on baytril, potassium iodine and steroids. His most recent xray shows he is making good progress but he may be left with some minor issues. Not a lot of information out there as these cases are quite rare. Let me know if you want more info!
