A yard that will accept Stallions.

Bit of a rant and bit of help needed here. I am posting under another name because this is a little of a sensitive nature...

Things haven't been so great this year, actually for a lot longer than that but really there is only so much can take and I think I have just reached crunch.

I am in a relationship (such as it is!). Financially things haven't been great for a while. For many reasons I do not have a paid job - moving round country with OH etc. MANY reasons, so please do not criticise as I just dont have the energy to go into ALL the details. I was a professional in another life but haven't been for a very long time. This week things have just gotten worse between me and my OH and along with everything else I feel I just cant take this any more and am considering moving back home (hopefully temporarily) with mom.

The problem is I have 5 horses, one of which is a stallion (gelding is NOT an option!) Now one could go on loan to a trusted home, 2 could live out, 1 is a stallion and 1 is retired and would need a stable for the winter.

With that in mind I need to find a yard in Hertfordshire that would put up with us. :)

Sensible suggestions gratefully received.

I can't help much but maybe try looking for a small yard or rent a field with a couple of stables in? They are about but I'm afraid you've got to look hard.. I used to keep mine in a large field with a few stables at the bottom end of it. Now I keep them on a cow farm were I rent a few stables and given 3 fields (as I own a colt that can not go in with my mares!). So my only advise is don't give up!! It is a lot less likely a large yard will have space for a stallion but just ask everywhere you can. There's no harm in asking, you'll only get a 'yes' or 'no' answer :)

Alex.

Thanks. Its actually the kinda thing I would ideally be looking for. :) The problem is that I am not in Hertfordshire at the mo and am a little out of touch with what is there now. Not easy for me to get down there either so kind of doing it remotely.

I will be hunting the web tho. :)

You could try ad trader and put in your post code. The liveries and small private yards often advertise on this site.:)

Where in herts are you?
When I was looking for a livery I googled around and there was something on preloved that said there was poss a whole yard to rent (small)
I'll try find it :)

Yes i agree i think a local farm may be your answer.
I have 5 horses also and the thought of having to move them all in your position would be scary !!
However i do rent a field from a local farmer and there are a couple of us there. One guy breeds race horses he has a couple of boxes in a barn . I just have a field for summer grazing and the other has her own little set up in the field. It may be the answer with your stallion if you can find a nice farmer wondering what to do with the empty sheds he has and also may work out cheaper for you ? Probably be able to source your hay and bedding to at the right price. It may provide you with a temp fix anyway
Good luck x

I can imagine it's very difficult for you :( do you know any one in Hertfordshire at the moment that would be able to do a bit of hunting around for you to help out? I would but I live miles away lol.. Good luck with it though, try the yellow pages and other phone books too for yards and people offering grazing :)

Thanks guys. Really helpful suggestions. :) :)

Feeling low enough without this stress as well. :( Dont really know anyone I can ask in Herts anymore. Going to have to find a job down there as well so the cheaper the better :). Cant lump that on my mom as well. I will be moving in with my cats too. OH in London so wouldn't be able to look after the cats. Think it best I make a clean break.

God knows i wouldn't do this if I could see any other way. It should never have come to this andmy poor mom. :( So not a good time for her. :(

A barn and field for the horses would be heaven! :) Think I may just need to go down "to visit mom" for the weekend. Maybe my old hay man would know some friendly farmers. :)

just a thought if you could find a yard or field to put the rest in how about putting the stallion in a racing yard as they are used to entires. There may nor be turnout though

Thanks, but I really need to be very careful how I handle this with my boys. This really is my problem and I may be going thru hell but I cant put them thru it as well.

They have been a herd for the last 5 years and if I split them up it would have to be the ponies and the horses. But cant split the horses up. I think the old boy would have a heart attack if I took the stallion away. They have been field mates since the stallion was a baby.

Ideal would be to keep them together. The old boy needs a stable for the winter, living out 24/7 was really hard on him as he would keep up with the ponies, but his body just cant keep that end of the bargain up anymore.

I'll keep looking, something will come up.

Thankies for all your suggestions tho. :)

As has been said before, if you do go and visit mum for the weekend ask about at local farms to see if they have a spare field with a barn or stable you can use :) I think that's your best bet. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Could you put a ad up in a local tack shop or feed merchants in the area you want to go to? some one may know of something. Good luck.

I'd give Sheila at Catlips a ring on 01923 282213, she's just outside Chorleywood, Hertfordshire and may know of somewhere.

Catlips is a tack shop, so I'm sure she won't mind her telephone number being put on a forum.

Thanks Ashgrove. I'd forgotten all about Catlips - Not been there for YEARS! :) Will do. Cant believe I am going to have to do this with winter coming up! :( Hey Ho - Needs must... :)

Nothing useful to add really other than its definatley worth putting an ad in local free ads and preloved. Just wanted to wish you luck in finding somewhere soon and getting sorted. :)
