I'm in year 11, finished art already, done my exam etc. i've done structure of horses and fun fair horses, i prefer painting rather than sculpture or drawing, so i did an A3 cubist painting, detailed, complicated, gave me numerous headaches and took me whole y10 and y11 to complete, so i wouldn't advise doing that :) i'm going in tomorrow for 2 exams and to take my projects home so i'll send you some photos of my projects, etc. could you post here or send me some pictures of your prep to help with the final idea? i'm missing art already so i'm willing to help :D
here's the big cubist main piece i was talking about:

I did GCSE art 3 years ago and this was my final piece:

Now up in my living room, and I can't stand it but my mum likes it (need to draw something else to replace it!)
I also really don't know why I picked pencil for it, as at the time I couldn't stand it and I took forever with it, and we only had 10 hours to complete the thing!

I also did this:

Which looked soo much better on a plain white background, but apparently I couldn't leave the paper unpainted/blank  so did the icky grey and rubbish flames which wrecked the affect. It's also up in the living room, but I want to redo it to fix the issues!

There is a stickied thread in the Picture Gallery section with loads of work by talented HHO members as well that might inspire you :)

Thankyou victoria1980x
She's done some amazing stuff over the years,'and has been part of some fantastic exhibitions.
She's based at a fantastic studio called 'Project Workshops' nr Andover. Her sculpture work is fab, but the bronzing process is really expensive - I was shocked how expensive it is.
I admire her for sticking with it, I also studied fine art but am now a Project Manager for a mobile phone company (pays more sadly). I do flirt with the idea I'd going back to it, but I'm too flipping busy :(

Have a look on the society of equestrian artists website for lots of art showing horses.

My husband is an equestrian artist, but I'm not allowed to post a link to his website or the tfc will tell me off.

Well I will help where I can, as used to be art teacher and have horses. I would suggest looking at what you are good at

Drawing/ sketching
Painting
Collage
Making/ sculptural

It depends on what work has come before the final piece, you need to show your thought processes and how you have got there.

Example. If you have been doing lots of drawing/ sketching of horses in real life then it would make sense to build on this for your final piece. Horse can be tricky animals to draw due to proportions so maybe look at going more abstract so you don't need to draw the whole horse, just parts that can then be worked together into a final piece.

Although your Yr10, Yr 11 will come around quickly so the examiners will be looking for thought processes so make notes to go with your work, experiment with lots of ways of working and be brave, as long as you can show how you have developed your idea you will get plenty of marks.

Schools will vary depending on budgets so I've no idea what yours is like but I would recommend for most of your projects using (in the build up to final piece) some of the following

Mixed media - so use graphite, charcoal, white paint to create sketches with more texture and depth.
Use paint either acrylic or watercolour to look at colour studies
Make small sculptures or parts of and experiment with colour and texture on them
Sketchbooks, sketchbooks and more sketchbooks!!! I can't get across just how important these are, always have it with you and make notes, sketch anything that takes your interest.

Also to make sketchbooks more interesting, paint some pages white to add texture, dry brush a colour to them, add other materials, ribbon, glue pages together, see the sketchbook as a piece in it's own right.

Hope this helps, if you want any more advice feel free to PM

The society address is http://www.equestrianartists.co.uk/

I also had great success with Mixed media - I loved using Tissue paper, and hand made papers and bleach, overlayed with charcoal and oil pastels.

As above, your thought process is key, and build a portfolio of things that inspire you, and how they have given you inspiration.
It might be a single image or artist, that uses a technique you want to emulate - you can fill a sketch book trying various sketches, images, mock ups which in turn may lead onto a single final piece.

In fact the experimentation process will take your to your final submission - you need to include the work that got you to this point.

Hope this makes sense.

Kat can you post the link please as *I* would like to look and cannot be faffed to guess

Sorry, last time I got told off was in response to a direct request for his website so I can't post it. However I'll PM it to you so you don't have to guess ;)

Your GCSE must have been different to mine...
We did Observations, Artist Research, Ideas and Development then our Final Piece. We created our final pieces by combining the styles of the artists we chose in artist research (Usually 2) and our own observations. We came up with 9/10 ideas and developed them into a final piece :)
Sorry if that was confusing! :D hahaha but I can't help really because I'm unsure as to whether your course is the same as ours :P

I have seen this lady's work before (there was a programme on tv recently, too) and I was going to suggest having a look at her. Stunning stuff!! And the fact that it is all made from naturally formed driftwood is astonishing!

Just finished my GCSE art and one of my final pieces featured a horse; however the one thing our art teacher kept plugging at us was that you have to jump through all the hoops(not sure if you're on the same exam board so may be different) but in the coursework you HAVE to get the observation, artist study and development to a high standard or your final piece could be brilliant and your work would bring you down.

However I had a look at a range of artists including Lydia Kiernan, Laurie Pace, Da Vinci, I found the more people I looked at the more certain I became about what I wanted my final piece to be and what techniques I was going to use to go about it. I didn't do sculpture much, apart from a few clay sculptures from different angles in observation, but in my previous project I was considering it and my teacher said even so, its still a good idea to do a good solid artist study on one that isn't sculpture but relates strongly to the type of style or focus of the piece you wish to do (also should you completely change your mind on sculpture you have something to fall back on!)

My teacher had a few suggestions for artist studys, the rest I found via google and google images, you can make a solid start by typing horse sculptures into images, find one you like and it usually links to the artists' website where you can view their other work:)

oh, and have fun, I already miss doing art!:D

Thanks so Much, nice to get some advice from a good Art teacher :D I've been doing abit of every thing, Sketching, Drawing, Painting and Collage and started to experiment with materials for sculpture. Ahhh I'm so glad you've gave me some advice and an idea what to do. My schools awful with no resources not even paper-No joke  and the art teacher well... He never checks our work or gives us advice, Just puts the radio and just lets us get on with it. So thanks so much for commenting and giving me an idea what my project should be like and what I should be doing :D

Aww Thanks so much Yeah I will do ;) Your Art is so good. Amazing x

Lucy good luck with your project.I love art but was not that interested in my school projects, we were never given enough freedom and had hardly any art materials. I hope your school is better than mine was. This thread has really inspired me. I'm going to sort out a sketch book tomorrow, thanks for the idea JVB :)

I did horses as my project for GCSE art (my teacher only let me as I nagged him constantly!) and will echo comments from others regarding the need for solid course work demonstrating different media, techniques etc etc etc. gosh it was twelve years ago I sat my GCSE so not sure how up to date I am!! My final piece was an oil painting of a horse x country - my mum has kept it, I can't stand it!!! For project work I played with all sorts of styles including expressionist and cubist; sadly I don't have those anymore as my school kept them for displaying :-(

I sometimes get enquiries from people who are studying their art GCSE and ask my questions about my style etc and technique which is quite nice :-)

Good luck though!!!

ahhh I know what you feel like, I love drawing but at school theres no art materials as well so we have to take every thing in (including paper) and you loose interest-well I did with my last project, but at least Horses interests me :)
