Hi, I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me, my horse has horrific hives!!

They first appeared november last year even though nothing had changed and just went after three weeks.

he then got them again and i took him off all food, changed stables and field and they went away following a high dose of antihistamine and changing his diet. they have come back more recently and has had them for over 2 months now and they are getting worse. Again nothing changed and he is on limited food.

I have tried everything - up to 32 antihistamine, changed his diet, given him a detox additive, rugged him head to toe, clipped him and washed him for mites. none ofwhich have helped this time....

i thought it might be tea tree oil shampoo as a common factor with each time them coming up is when he is washed but they havent gone down this time, thought they started to then he was washed baby shampoo and they are back with avengence.

any help is very welcome!!!!!!

It sounds like you have done everything you can for your horse. He could be allergic to more than one thing which is why you are finding it difficult to help him.

I am allergic to sticky plasters and Codeine and get hives and I know how painful, itchy and miserable it is.

Have you contacted your vet, I presume you have and he/she is also stumped.

Have you tried cutting out alfalfa from his diet? you will be surprised how many feed stuffs contain this. I ask, because my horse is allergic to it. He gets itchy, sore and grumpy.

I really hope you can find a cure for your horse. He is lucky you are trying so hard to help him.

I had this 4 years ago with my mare. The hives came and went one winter and appeared with a vengeance the following spring. We tried everything-changing bedding, feed, new rugs etc etc.She was well in herself. The vet gave a steroid which worked for a couple of weeks but I was reluctant to repeat as she is half welsh and I was concerned about possible laminitis.Eventually I spoke to Natural animal feeds and she had a course of D Tox and one other immune boosting powder-Immunoforte? I cant quite remember the name -and whether it was coincidence or not I will never know but after 10 days the hives disappeared never to return!
They were distressing to me as she looked as though she was starting something contagious and I did keep a vets note for when we took her competing. It was mystifying as we did countless tests and never got to the bottom of it but they did go as quickly as they came in the end!

My mare has suffered too and I ended up with a £200+ vet bill for steroids and no long term difference.

In desperation I tried a course of Global Herbs Restore and also their Immuplus for under £50 and she was improved within 24 hrs and within 2-3 days hive free and has remained so since then. I had changed everything beforehand, bedding, stable, cut all feeds out, changed forage, rugs etc etc etc, no difference. Definitely the herbal remedies that resolved her problem.

It is horrible to see them like it that though, my mare's knees even swelled up and started excuding pus and she was literally one big welt in the end, where all the small lumps joined together.

thank you sooo much! if i you would be able to give me the name of the feed people you spoke to i would be so grateful!!! thankfully he is more than well in himself and seems to be totally unawares how bad he looks!!!

he has had a detox and it didnt seem to make too much difference!! maybe i need to do it more carefully! we thought about alfalfa!! i think i need to start over! i did read an article about nitrates in the water causing hives so will run test on that as he does get worse after bathing, thus why i thought it was shampoo as a common factor of them coming up is following or just after bathing! but it hasnt gone down at all and has been a few weeks since he was bathed!
yes he is spoilt so i will try everything!!!!

My boy seems to have an allergy to oil, anything with a high oil content and he comes up in hives too so he is on HiFi light and grass nuts.
I have a standby supply of antihistamines but so far since I changed his diet he's hive free.

thats a poss for him! however as soon as i put this post up a few of his hives started weepign and they have really subsided just with a few small ones left!
he is on the detox and biotics and i have put him on ready grass and some fibre nuts and we seem to be in top of them at the mo! they def come up more then he is hot so he is clipped out and left a little colder than i would like but he seems happy!!
thanks for all the advice!
