I first noticed it about a week ago, my mare was scratching her bum in the stable and i had a look and noticed a dark patch of hair that she was scratching. so i looked closer and it picked off, still attatched to dry skin. It came off in large type flakes, leaving skin below. It was quite powdery. Its not infected or sore in anyway, just looks like normal skin. I picked off the whole dark patch, about the size of a tennis ball and she stopped itching. The hair has grown back over the past week. A lady at my yard mentioned rain scald as its the bit just next to the bum that sticks out if the rugs a little small. Ive since put larger rugs on her. She was turned away in a field in the middle of no where so didnt want her to look that posh if that makes sense and she had one of her older rugs on that didnt fit perfectly.

Anyway, i wasnt really worried about it, just thinking it was something innocent but now shes started scratching her face too. The bit around her cheeks came off without the skin, looking just like shedding but on her forehead the fur was again attatched to the skin, coming away and leaving a white powder.

Does anyone know what this might be? Is she just shedding in a serious way? :/ It doesnt hurt her, it itches until its off. Shes not acting any differently so dont think its really bothering her that much and its not infected in any way.

Im going to give her a bath with medicated shampoo as soon as the sun is out. Would you be worried??

Ive had her a year now, but before she was turned away shed been stabled in winter and didnt shed anywhere near the amounts she is doing now!

Thanks

sounds bizzare! If it was tail end only i'd suggest pin worm. Head as well though, I guess it could be rain scald as that would make sense. Medicated shampoo should help clear it up and won't do any harm. There are ALOT of cases of lice at the moment, is she bedded on straw at all even for short periods when she comes in?

Keep an eye on it, bath her and see what happens, if skin keeps coming off or she's intensly itchy then think about getting the vet.

Hi, as Ella19 says, there are lots of cases of lice around. Malaseb is a really good medicated shampoo to use. I think you need to go for it and be prepared to keep her in of she needs drying out. It's not cold at the moment and she sounds as if she is in discomfort. Can you give your vet a ring and have a chat?

sounds like she may have some extra friends!!! a good shampoo(with a medicated shampoo dermoline? or selsun or malaseb) and thorough rinse (if she is dithery after pop her on the lunge for 5 mins soon warms them up) then a good wipe over with coopers fly stuff. repeat in 10 days to 2 weeks. douse your rugs with a liberal application of louse powder. if you are worried about her then call your vet for a visit.
