how much weight could our lightweight 14.1hh (high withered) pony cary? he's a Welsh x Arab, and is quite narrow. (pics at bottom of post)

also, how much could our Irish Sports Horse carry? he's a full-up 15.1, but again is very lightweight, def. more TB then anything else.

here's the pony:

thanks!

it's about a stone in weight for the saddle, so i'd say a rider of up to 8-9 stone max for the first one, 9-10 stone max for the second, depending on how balanced and good the rider, and whether the horse is being asked to do long, fast work, or to jump.
i'm sure i'll be shot down in flames for saying those weights though!

10 the first looks simalar build to Pip- he takes 10 stone(+saddle) doing absolutely everything.

The second probably a fair weight 12 stone for doing everything, more for less intense work.

well, i ride the first doing quite intense stuff, i'm about 7 stone, mum was curious if she could hack him, just walk and gentle trot, because he's not getting a lot of hacking as it's so dark by the time we get home from school... she's 10 stone, hoping to lose another 1 stone. she's a pretty well balanced rider...

for Solo, we wanted my dad to learn on him, but he's def too heavy for him, so we wondered about just gentle (30 mins) hacking in walk. my dad is 13 stone, but rides a bit like a pot8o!

he really wants to learn though, and it's a shame that all of ours are too light, apart from Oscar, who's a poo and would probably have him off within minutes!

if it's gentle hacking in walk, i'd up it a lot, tbh. slow work is fine, it's speed and weight that does them in imo.
i let my cousin ride my 16hh mw advanced mare for a gentle 1/2 hour hack once... it was only when we got back that he mentioned he was 17 stone! :0

what you want to do sounds fine, the first would prolly take about 11 stone plus a saddle and the second about 12 stone plus a saddle, this would be for reasonable work not just a ploddy hack, but for a fit, well horse with a balanced rider.
