I'm really sorry i did post this yesterday, but not many replies (but thank-you to those that did answer) so keeping my fingers crossed and hoping some other friendly people here will answer.

My friends mare has cut her tongue about 2-3 inches up from the tip right in the centre, she is obviously uncomfortable as she keeps sticking it out, but is eating and drinking as normal.

Is there anything that can be done to make her more comfortable?, will saliva keep it clean?

Sorry, not sure anything can be done but just want to check.

Also in CR

Although my horse has never cut his tongue, he has bitten it and caused it to swell on occasion, he dangles it out his mouth and wont eat and dribbles for about 40 minutes until he decides hes better. I often place a cold hose in his mouth, placed in the area the bit would be but facing towards the front of his mouth (not his throat! or this may cause him to choke), he then opens his mouth and this helps reduce the swelling quicker and clears salivia that hes dribbling. A bit messing but it seems to work for me.
If shes been uncomfortable for a while have you tried seeing if there is anything the vet can do?

I would have thought, like a human cut tongue, there is little can be done. Is it bleeding profusely? in which case it would have to be seen otherwise it will heal quickly as the tissues in the mouth do.

:( Sorry Welsh Mare, have only just seen your post.... and don't have an answer as I have never had experience of a horse with a tongue injury.
If she is eating and drinking comfortably, nature should take care of her. If any concern at all though, I would telephone my vet and ask his advice. (most vets offer free advice over the phone or online). Maybe your vet has a website with a troubleshooting page ?
Hope your mind is soon at rest and your horse thrives and improves :)
