Right, I wonder if you great people can give me your opinions as I am stuck. I am moving house and so have to move my horse away from a yard we both absolutely love

We event so we need a school, decent hacking and I need a YM I can trust will treat everybody the same and will be able to deal with anything. So the choices are:

1. Big ish yard (similar size to where we are now), functionaly, but a bit 'shabby', arena is there, but quite deep going. When I went to visit it, the wall of the arena had fallen down (this had the flood lights on it). The YO said they would be fixed but I can't be sure judging by the rest of it. She said if I wanted to use a 'posh arena', her friend had a good outdoor arena over the road.

However, I very much got from the YO that she wouldn't take any sh*t and that she knew what she was doing. In terms of fitness work the hacking goes straight from the yard. They have some racehorses there and she said I was welcome to do my fitness work with them (handy!). Place has a walker, cross country course, gallops and staff all day on yard.

2. Second yard was much smaller (8 horses) but yard very well maintained. It has an indoor and massive, very nice outdoor school. Hacking goes straight from the yard. I was chatting with the YO and she seemed nice, but a bit of a wuss... With it being so quiet and the hours I can work, I very much got the feeling I'd never see anyone else. I don't really care about that but it would be nice to see some of the bridleways with company sometimes!

So that's it really. I'm very stuck!! My current instructor knows the YO at yard 1 and said she would not hesitate to leave her horse with her. Number 2 YO s unknown. I just don't know what to do

Any advice greatly appreciated

I think I would be tempted by yard 1.If only because of the recommendation of your instructor. It really depends on whether you can cope with the condition of the school but if you can have free access to the one over the road it won't be an issue.

Don't stress yourself out, maybe you could go and walk round the hacking on both yards and see which you liked most, and maybe try and speak to a few others at each yard and see what impression you get from them.
I run a small yard and when people view they sometimes turn up unexpected a few days later when 'just passing through', I expect they want to see what the yard is like when I'm not expecting anyone to visit, or at a certain time of day etc, which you could try and do? Maybe go up at the time of day you would most likely be there and see how busy it is and who is about etc. Good luck with your move, both yards sound nice so I'm sure you and your horse will be happy

I've been so worried about moving to somewhere 'unknown'. I just want to make sure I get the best place for my horse and that he will get the best care, as well as finding the facilities that we will need to event... Ooooh, decisions!

no 2 for me, you cant beat a nice small quiet yard! and with those facilities your laughing, im on a yard with 5 others horses and an arena and my own individual summer and winter turnouts and its fab!!

Hmm this is difficult because the 2nd yard has the indoor school - but then the first yard has the cross country course - a horse walker and you have great hacking - a yard owner that wont take any crap - Staff there all the time so you know your horse will be ok and if anything happens someone will always be around - You can go out with them for the fitness work - plus the yard owner said you could use the school across the road which is a "posh one" I would go back and look at number 1 again and myabe number 2 - but I think I would go for number 1 as theres always people around and a yard owner that wont take any crap and really good facilities.

Good luck and let us know what you deicide on xxx

Thanks for your replies. I agree that an indoor school would be a great luxury, I've never had one so I almost don't know what I'm missing! Plus, I really don't mind rain! I guess the bonues would be if it gets icy like it has been, I could continue to work him in the indoor, rather than have 2 weeks off like we have done recently!

I would go for 2 straight away... but the xc course!! I have one at my yard and would hate not to have one now.... saying that... it depends if there is a xc course you could hire near to yard 2.... sorry this isnt helping as i cant decide myself!!!

what sort of livery are you going to have?
If you are having help is your horse easy for anyone to do??

I do like the sound of the facilities at the first yard, But as owner doesn't seem too bothered about the state of the place and is by all accounts a toughie, Is she going to take any notice if you have any issues that you need sorting out??

a wuss of a YO on a small yard might be easier if you need things sorted out, like a repair on stable or fencing.

I know at the moment fencing is causing an awful problem at my yard for some people and there is little hope of it getting sorted out (not nice)!

I'd probably go for no 1 if I was you I reckon you'd enjoy it more. I like a bit of a buzz about a yard and reckon you might find the no 2 option very quiet and do you want someone unknown who comes across as a wuss looking after your eventer?

number 1,

if the arena is bad now how is it going to be in summer, deeper? how often would you feasibly be able to use her friends?

I think I would go for 2
