Please help me put this stop on the martingale before I FREAK OUT

Its a running martingale. I am VERY spatially challenged :o

I have the stop over the rings (fairy liquid who knew). Now what do I do with the neckstrap? Its already attached to the martingale. Everyone says put the non buckle end through the ring to make an x shape but as it is attached already it just rucks up and looks wrong. ARGH. I HATE TACK.

If you imagine a running martingale laid flat, rings on the right, girth end on the left

the neckstrap is about half way down, attached onto the martingale, obvs you can move it up and down the martingale part.

The stopper is now on the martingale next to the neckstrap but the neckstrap isnt through the stopper yet iyswim
 
Haven't used a martingale for years but I remember just thread neck strap non buckle end through and then slide it down until it's in the right place. Takes a bit of force and really helps if your martingale is nice and supple.

Aargh think I know what's gone wrong. You have to get the neck strap threaded through the stop much higher up, think I used to slide it through when I'd got the stop past the rings. Then you pull it down to the correct position.

Take the non buckle end of the neck strap and fees it through the stopper.

The stopper will be at an angle.

Might have to wiggle things a bit to make it lie flat.

Do up neckstrap at the buckle.
 
when you say feed the end through should the neckstrap be completely seperate from the martingale??? :confused:

it is attached with a loop around the martingale, I can pull it off though
 
Take the long end of the neck strap and feed it through your stopper so its between the stopper and the vertical part of your martingale. Now pull. You'll have to tug a fair bit and your stopper might roll up but you'll get there.
 
If it's looped on and not sewn on then you should be able to thread the neck strap through and then pull it into position. You won't be able to do that with the neck strap in the right position though, you will need to pull it up to close to the rings to thread it through. Maybe do that and then get ready to give it all a good yank to get the neck strap in the right position.
 
You need to undo the buckle thats on the neckstrap so you have the rings on the right the girth end on the left the buckle end of the neckstrap at the top and the end of the neckstrap with the holes punched in at the bottom. slide the stop along to where the neckstrap is round the martingale and then push the end of the neckstrap thats at the bottom (the end with the holes punched in it) through the stopper and then when its almost through pull it hard so the stopper is diagonally across the loop of the neckstrap that is round the martingale
 
Has anyone got a pic of martingale with stopper etc in place they could maybe post to help the OP.
(OP I am hopeless with tack. I'm a "minimalist"! I only haul out a martingale for my one boy, and he's in rest at the moment so his is erm mouldy. So no pic from me!)

I hate complicated tack! I do cavessons and snaffles and thats it.

I have given up and I am having a glass of wine.

I don't see how you can thread the end of the neckstrap and pull it when it is actually already attached to the martingale!!!!!! you just get a nasty lump

thank you for the pic - my martingale is like that EXCEPT the neckstrap is attached so the stopper would have to go OVER the bit that attaches the neckstrap to the martingale
 
Soak stopper in hot water, put two bits of baler twine through it, one bit attach to stable/tack room beam, loop the other put foot in loop and push down, this will elongate the stopper and you can muck about threading bits through to your hearts content!
 
OP, take a look at this random link to a martingale on e-bay with a white stop you can see how it works.
You undo the neck strap, thread the non buckle end right back through on itself and through the stop so the actual martingale and neck strap make a cross shape and the stop makes one half on an X over the top of the cross.

Attached like this one? As in your part with the loops( girth and reins) is fed through a stithced in hole of the neck strap part, so is free to slide up and down?

I didn't understand that the stopper had to 'hold' down the part that was 'attached' to the martingale

sorry I told you I was a klutz

up until last month we had a section a with a grackle and a horrible bit

it didnt matter how often I tacked him up I could NEVER do it properly

Ill admit I gave up trying to do this. I threaded the girth bit through but had the same problem getting the neck strap to sit properly. I gave up and used a bit of plaiting thread to tie the stopper to the neck strap.

Billylula, I am sure that over the years I've found new and interesting ways to tack up. For a start, I can tell you that I don't put martingale rubbers on anything like the way they're done in the video :eek: I once spent hours trying to get a new set of bates webbers "threaded" onto a saddle instead of simply unclipping the thingummy that the leathers go through. I sort of don't do 3D... can't do jigsaw puzzles either.

The best way is


first get some bailing twine 2 separate pieces
next put two pieces through the rubber stop this shows one piece


next pull both bits apart thus stretching the stop, get someone to push the two rings through the rubber and pull them, then repeat with the non buckle end of the martingale then p[ull the rings and the stap bit apart thus sliding the rubber down to the correct place
