I am going to hound exersise with the Beaufort this week. I was speaking to my YO and she said I can wear my tweed jacket, which is brown tweed, but then said actually I cant because it has a velvet coller and they wont let me wear it.
is it really forbidden to have a velvet coller on a tweed jacket? will I get laughed off the field? what about when it gets to Autumn hunting time? im going to be wearing a pony club tie, because I am going with the pony club if that makes any difference.
Also is a navy blue numnah ok?
thanks in advance!

I would think your fine with a velvet coller as long as its fairly discreet. Either wear your PC tie or a stock- I think a stock looks smarter when your a bit older (say over 14). Also wear your PC badge.
If you dont have any others the numnah is ok as long as its not blingy and not a square 1. Really i wd look at getting a sheepskin or a thick 1 so it absorbs some of the sweat and doesnt rub after a long day.
Hope this helps and happy hunting!!

As a foreigner from a country with no tradition for hunting, I have thought it would be fun to give it a go once in the UK. But when I read this kind of post I get a bit worried. ;-)

I am very curious to see what replies you get. Do they seriously care about your collar? Or what shape your numnah is? If this is really how people are like, why would you want to hang out with them? :-/

CJ, it is all about being smartly turned out in appropriate, practical kit for a days hunting. Hunting takes place only with the co-operation of the landowner, thus slight dress shows respect for this permission. In addition the hunt staff will have spent hours making sure their uniform is immaculate, so it is only fair that the mounted field follow this example.

It is also what makes it comfortable for your ned, who will carry you all day - while a discreet sheepskin numnah will look smart, it also soaks up more sweat and as alidegg points out will thus be less likely to rub.

Hunting people aren't pedantic for no reason; the traditional hunt kit of either a thick tweed coat or black/navy/red hunt coat will ensure that the rider is protected from the elements for the whole day.

_CJ_ I got slightly more replies on the same thread in New Lounge, here
thread in new lounge
as said above, I think it is just about looking smart, and enjoying yourself too, but hopefully the other thread will help, like it did me, to see that as long as you look smart you should be ok!

i think much depends on where the hunt is and who hunts with it. here in deepest wales we have people hunting in farmers wellies and a 1970's fairisle type pullover on a cob they've just pulled out of the field.
